The annual holiday-themed Race 13.1 Durham half marathon,10K and 5K returns this December! With North Carolina’s mild winter temperatures, this December race will be a great way for any runner to close out the fall race season and stay focused on training through the Thanksgiving holiday!
In addition to the shops and restaurants Northgate has to offer, runners and spectators will want to take advantage the restaurants and eateries that gave Durham the title “Tastiest Town in the South” by Southern Living. Home to Duke University, Duke Gardens, the Durham Bulls baseball team and the Durham Performing Arts Center, the No. 4 ranked theater in the country, Durham and the surrounding Research Triangle Park offers plenty of sites to see and activities to do throughout the weekend.

My very first half marathon and achieved my goal of finishing in 2 hours (especially it was raining). It is one of the events hosted by Capstone and I was registered with their BibPass.
The course is over all flat but be prepared that there are a few hills on the course.

The majority of this race was on the American Tobacco Trail, all of which was paved. There was tons of parking as the start/finish was in the parking lot of an auto dealership.
Swag included a tech t-shirt and Christmas tree shaped medal that doubles as an ornament.

there is nothing that prevents people from cheating on this race as there are no time stamps throughout the whole thing. We watched someone skip both loops and then try to finish in front of us. this is a hilly race with a cheap race director who is known for cutting corners in his planning. So it is not a surprise to me that there were not enough time stamps to actually catch people cheating in this race. I just don’t get why people cheat.

Packet pick went smoothly and there is plenty of parking on race day. It was very cold but there was a festive atmosphere. Course was well-marked and easy to follow. Plenty going on afterwards. Not personal best but beat my time from last year. Won first in age-group.
Nice job by the 13.1 folks for this one.

Loved this race
Great experience for a first time runner. Will definitely participate in other Race 13.1 runs. Plenty of convenient parking, loved the atmosphere and after-race food was great! MORE

I would definitely do this race again but probably run the half marathon distance from now on.

I’d highly recommend this race to folks who like rolling hills. It’s a different route than the majority of races that run through Durham, so it’s nice to see some less-traveled parts of the city. There’s ample parking, cool t-shirts and medals, and awesome post-race food (catered! not just bananas!) and beer. You even get the chance to win money just for participating! I will definitely run this next year.
