I would highly recommend this race to anyone trying to PR — it’s almost entirely flat, with the exception of a few small hills, and not too many turns on the course. The weather was gorgeous (about 60-65 degrees, sunny) and the scenery is quite lovely, with a run through the city and along the bay. My only real critique is that the aid stations were too far apart and there weren’t enough portalets — I lost my PR time waiting in line 10+ minutes to use one.

This a good race on many levels — tons of easy parking at the Friendly Center, a huge turnout of friendly folks from several running groups (Black Men Run and Black Girls Run), and a relatively mild course that runs on some city streets, but mostly greenway. Downside: the greenway is a bit uneven, with some fairly extreme side slanting portions, and the concrete is hard on the joints. (My finish time was slowed by the stretching I had to do from miles 10-13.1 to ease my aching hips!) So if you need softer surfaces, this is probably not the race for you. But it was well managed and had nice bling (medals shaped like mason jars!)

I’d highly recommend this race to folks who like rolling hills. It’s a different route than the majority of races that run through Durham, so it’s nice to see some less-traveled parts of the city. There’s ample parking, cool t-shirts and medals, and awesome post-race food (catered! not just bananas!) and beer. You even get the chance to win money just for participating! I will definitely run this next year.
