The North Olympic Discovery Marathon takes place on the beautiful Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, a unique point to point course that incorporates the beautiful Olympic Discovery Trail with stunning views of the Olympic Mountains and a five mile finishing stretch along the shores of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Frequent sightings of seals, eagles, and an array of shore birds are common from the trail. Iconic trestle bridges provide beautiful back drops. Salmon can be seen spawning at the Morse Creek crossing in the fall. The North Olympic Discovery Marathon is truly one of the most beautiful marathon venues anywhere.
This rails to trails course is a wide, hard surface (99% paved) trail. The course is marked at every mile and water stations are located approximately every two miles. Cool June weather can be expected – average high is 65F, average low is 49F, average mean is 57F.
The race is organized by the Port Angeles Marathon Association – a group of accomplished amateur athletes. The Marathon is a USATF certified course and a Boston Marathon qualifier.
The event hub is downtown Port Angeles and all event activities are within walking distance. Downtown offers hotels, restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and access to the waterfront. City Pier is open to the public on race day and all spectators, family, friends, and community members are invited to attend. We hope you will plan to run, play, and explore the amazing peninsula.
What is Run the Peninsula?
- A new race series on the Olympic Peninsula organized by the Port Angeles Marathon Association – the same folks who manage the North Olympic Discovery Marathon.
- The series is made up of 5 races spanning sections of the Olympic Discovery Trail from Port Townsend to Port Angeles.
- Each race offers a 5K or 10K distance. Longer distance options for North Olympic Discovery Marathon and Larry Scott Trail.
- Run with us on race day, or run VIRTUALLY. You have until December 31 of the same year to complete the races virtually.
- Finishers of each race will receive a unique medal. If you complete all 5 races your medals magnetize together to form the Olympic Mountain Range. You can find more information here.
- Save on your entry fees when you bundle more than four or more events.

This event could not happen without the support of the community, our volunteers and the Peninsula Trails Coalition (Build and maintain the Olympic Discovery Trail). Run the Peninsula series takes place on the Olympic Discovery Trail, which is run by the Peninsula Trails Coalition. The Peninsula Trails Coalition is an amazing all volunteer group that helps to build, protect, grow and maintain the trail. If the weather cooperates, I don’t know if you can find many more beautiful races. Its a smooth and mostly all downhill run and goes thru forest and along the water. It was 65 and sunny with a mild breeze and I could have ran for miles more. Also a well done production–this one is a lot of fun

Overall Rating: Very good.
Course Difficulty: This course has some challenging hills, and on the day I ran it, a pretty stiff head wind and some rain. That aside, it is about average for races I run. 98% paved trail or road, with one small section of hard packed cinders.
Course Scenery: Awesome at times, boring at others. There was a section of the race that had a sign that said “twilight zone”, I thought it was a reference to the movie, but as it turns out, it was just a long boring stretch. I wasn’t really expecting that, but compared to the mountain views, the bay, and the dense forest, it was a small and insignificant portion of the run.
Race Production: Excellent! Good communication, outstanding volunteers, and timely starts. The RD was willing to let me pick my bib up on race morning if I needed, an important note for anyone doing a double or maniacs.
Race Swag: Awesome. Nice medal, drop bag, and a 1/4 zip tech pullover.
My Performance: Not great. My finish time doesn’t really reflect it, but when I woke up, I just didn’t want to run a marathon that day. I think maybe I had just been on the road too long and had lost motivation. I spent much of the run just trying to convince myself to keep going. Happy that I pushed through and got state 48 crossed off the list.
This is not the easiest race to get to. You are going to have to drive 100 miles through slow traffic to get here, but once you arrive, it is a good run. At one point on the trail, I followed an otter for about 100 yards, so you’re right in the middle of nature. If you don’t mind the drive, it’s a good run.

The race was an interesting race. At times it was very pretty, but at times we were running through neighborhoods. I enjoyed the race, but on the day of the race for me it was warmer and more hilly than I had expected.
