Looking for a race that’s challenging, scenic, and unlike anything else? Welcome to The Flying Squirrel Ten Miler – Asheville’s premier 10-mile road race presented by Jus’ Running. Whether you’re chasing a personal record or just looking for an unforgettable running experience, this race is for you.
Starting just blocks from downtown Asheville, the one-of-a-kind course takes you on a journey through the winding, shaded roads of Town Mountain, including hidden gems like Sunset Drive and Patton Mountain Road. With the Southern Appalachians as your backdrop, you’ll be earning those views every step of the way.
This is a very hilly 10 mile “lollipop” course. The first and last ~.75 miles is fairly flat. The remainder of the course is hilly. Think of the course as one big hill – the first half is uphill and the second half is downhill. Most of the hills are fairly gradual, though there are a few short steep sections. The course is 85% paved, with miles ~5 through 6.5 on gravel (Patton Mountain Road).

The Flying Squirrel 10 Miler continues to be an excellent race. Lots of vendors at the start/finish, great post race food (Subway, donuts, fruit, Athletic Co beer). The course is very scenic, 5 miles up Beaucatcher Mt. from the edge of downtown north Asheville. My watch had 1,239 ascent. Every so often there will be a gap in the trees and views south of the town and mountains are nice.
2025 had great running weather, overcast, slight breezes in places, and 68 at the start.
Swag was a nice medal, tech shirt, water bottle, and various coupons.
I would love to make it next year.

I really enjoyed the Flying Squirrel 10 miler. The production was excellent – the pre race communication, the start/finish area, the course markings and volunteer placement, the enthusiastic volunteers. The course is uphill in the forested, posh area north of downtown Asheville. We stayed a block away from the start/finish. The weather was perfect. Packet pickup was the afternoon before and morning of the race. The 2024 race raised money for the drought stricken Rarámuri of Mexico. 7 Rarámuri were present for the race and other functions.
I ran barefoot and am very happy about the course layout – the streets have very smooth asphalt and are well maintained. There is a mile and a half section that is dirt and gravel, which slowed me down but even with that, I liked the whole race and knew what I was getting into from the website course description.
Swag was a nice blend shirt and medal. I hope to come back next year and run it again.

This the best (IMHO) road race in Asheville. The course is a lot of “fun”, with roughly 5 miles up a decent incline, and then 5 miles back down. It is almost two races in one, and requires some strategy. The race is ~90% on the roads, with some packed gravel. The scenery is beautiful, and you can see the governor’s Western mansion near the top of the mountain. You might also see a bear or two in the woods.
The post-race food is the best at any running event I have been to, and there is also lots of beer.
If you were to run one race in Asheville, I would recommend this one.
