Eagle Up Ultra is Stark County’s annual 24-hour endurance race. You have 24 hours to complete 100 miles, 100 kilometers (62 miles), the 50/50 … [50 Miles, then 50 Kilometers], 50 miles, 50 kilometers (31 miles), or 25K (15.5 miles). Compete as an individual or relay team. Registration is available for 4-person and 8-person relay teams for the 100 miles.
Based at Canal Fulton’s St. Helena Park, the course is flat and fast … on the Olde Muskingum and Ralph Regula Towpath Trails. There’s plenty of shade and the scenery is beautiful. Run/walk along the Tuscarawas River and the Ohio Erie Canal.
Plenty of aid support will be stationed on the course, including a super aid station in the park pavilion.
Course Information:
The 5-mile loop course is entirely on crushed limestone trails, except for the two ends where you will use the berm of Butterbridge and Cherry Street to cross from one trail to the other. The trails are almost completely flat. Mile markers will be placed on the course so you know where you are at all times.
The trails are not completely closed, so you will have to share the space with other runners, walkers and cyclers. Please be aware of those around you.

Nice course —no tree roots or hills. A loop but kind of an out and back. Mentally you are always two miles and change from a turn; mile and change from water and ICE. There were leisurely cyclists as the day got underway, which I find annoying late in a race. The turn around for the extra mile at the end meant that other runners could support each other as they finished which was fun.
The shirt has a nice design and color, sizing of arm holes on the tank is weird. I think it’s supposed to be a work out shirt but it’s cotton/poly blend?
Lots of spectators on the .25 approach to the finish/start ringing cowbells, playing music.
It got hot (obviously) but it was easy to stay hydrated. Four opportunities per loop to refill water.

I loved this race! Here are the highlights: 99% of the course is on crushed gravel. I ran it in trail shoes, but one could easily do it in road shoes too. The course is crazy flat. It’s mostly shaded with a few sunny spots here and there. It’s six 5-mile loops with an extra mile at the end to make it an even 31 miles. The loops make life much easier mentally. It breaks the race up into logical chunks that make fueling and hydration simpler. The main aid station has everything you need. I didn’t bring anything but a water bottle and had more than enough to sustain me. The run starts at 6am. This makes for an early wake-up call that morning, but actually aligns with my usual training runs so I liked it. Plus it means you finish before it gets too hot. The race organizer is a great guy, organized and seems to genuinely care about the runners. I highly recommend this race!

Overall Rating: Really good. Big RWB event with camping and rucking.
Course Difficulty: Flat and fast, although I had a lot of trouble with the “flatness” of the course making my feet hurt. I suppose over the last few months my feet have gotten used to ups and downs with a lot of movement over small obstacles. This course was a 5 mile loop on rail trail with very slight grade.
Course Scenery: I was on the course for nearly 16 hours and I didn’t really get bored. The out path is run next to a canal, over a bridge, and then back along a river. Nice mid-western scenery.
Race Production: Really good. No surprises at all. Everything started on time, and the volunteers were great. One large aid station at the start finish and a few smaller ones along the way. All aid stations were as advertised, and the course needed no marking. Pre-race information was timely and accurate. Registration was a breeze.
Race Swag: Awesome buckle and moisture wicking tee.
My Performance: I went into this race thinking it would be an easy run, but there are no easy 100k’s…period! I had a breakdown somewhere around mile 15, and if my son hadn’t paced me for 15 miles throughout the race, I am certain that I would have quit early.
Final notes: I’m not sure why this course was so hard for me, other than I think I broke something psychological during the UROC 100k in May and haven’t recovered yet. This is an excellent course for first time or experienced ultra runners. The RD was on course all day, and really tries to take care of his runners. If you’re looking to PR or break into the Ultra world, this would be a great place to do it!

Eagle Up Ultra is a well organized, exciting event. There’s tent camping starting on Friday and it’s a lively event. The course is flat and fast – it’s gravel, and I wasn’t prepared for that so I paid dearly with multiple blisters. I can say the medical tent was great! They were willing to help with whatever I needed. The food was great, lots of options. The RD was there the entire time and was checking in with people as they started new loops. I really enjoyed it and I’m ready to sign up for next year!

The 5 mile loop was extremely flat, makes for a great low-key entry to the world of ultra-running. There was a huge refreshment area near the start with everything you could need, two small water stops on course, and a snack stop about halfway around the loop that constantly switched out treats (nutter butters were my personal favorite!) Even in the pouring rain, the course was very pretty. You run on the path through the trees, circle up on the road (with a nearby pair of porta-potties thankfully!), then back through the trees some more. As some mentioned, you also see some horses pulling canal boats in the little river there.
People set up tents and food supply stops all along the loop, primarily located near the end by parking. Camping was allowed the night before and night of the race. For those who are not big fans of camping, I did have a reasonably priced hotel within about a 15 minute drive!
Packet pickup was a breeze and everything was really well organized. You were able to basically pick your distance. If you were going for 50k or 100k, it involved a little out-and-back at the end to get to the total mileage. The race director gave out hugs to very sweaty finishers as he gave out medals and buckles.
Overall I found this race to be extremely enjoyable and one I absolutely intend to do again. Whether it’s next year or another year or two away, I won’t forget how great this race was and how great of a course it was for PR-ing!

A fast-growing ultra event

This course is a 5-mile loop along the Ohio & Erie Canal. It’s very beautiful. If you’re lucky (like we were) you’ll get to see horses pulling the canal boats or perhaps an eagle perched in a tree. The trail is mostly crushed rock, but there is a stretch in Tent City that is grass. It’s very flat, if you’re looking for a PR. The trail is so well-made it did not get muddy or puddly even in the driving rains.
I set up my tent Friday afternoon. You’ll want to come as early as possible if you want to located on the edge of the course. Otherwise, it goes 2 or 3 tents deep. I was set up along the course and also had use of a canopy so my friends and I could just toss/retrieve things easily as we passed. Tent City was large so I would recommend bringing ear plugs and eye mask. I had these and slept like a log. If you don’t, you’ll hear generators, car alarms, conversations, etc., and you’ll see flashlights and other lights. I did find that my neighbors were very respectful and helpful. And, the race director bid everyone good night around 9pm and all music and equipment was shut down.
There was a nice pasta dinner provided, free of charge, on Friday night. 😛
The race, all distances, started at 6am so the course was cumbersome for the first lap. After that, as folks used the aid stations, everyone spread out. Because the trail is mostly all-wooded and is 5-miles long, I actually did not see many of my friends. Look for your peeps and take your selfies beforehand; otherwise, there’s a good chance you’ll never see each other. There is an amazing aid station at the start and finish, along with first aid and a selfie booth. There were two unmanned water stations. And, there was one other smaller manned station at the halfway point. While the aid stations were evenly spread, the port-o-pots are not. There are tons at the start, and two at the halfway point. There is no room on the trail for port-o-pots anywhere else. So, be aware of this. You’re only relieving yourself every 2.5 miles. Plan accordingly.
Since the laps are an even 5 miles, there are out-and-backs at the end to help you finish out the 50K or 100K distances. Also, you are awarded on what you finish, not what you register for. So, you have up to the last minute to decide. There are 50K, 50M, 100K, 50K/50M, and 100M options. You get a medal for 50K and 50M. You get a buckle for 100K, 50/50, and 100M. Each medal and buckle is custom made to the distance. And they are bee-u-tee-ful!!! The shirts are tech camo. This year is was red, but I saw silver and blue ones that must have been from previous years. They are gorgeous. When you cross your finish line, you’ll get a huge hug and your bling.
The food and beverage are plentiful. Guests can buy a wristband for beer. Runners get beer for free. There is also a pool, hot tub and fire pit (though the race directors forgot to bring it this year).
This was an amazingly fun event. I am definitely signing up next year.
