This was not my first time signing up for this race, but it was my first time actually starting, and completing, it. I’m so glad I did. Even though the rolling hills of San Juan Island made for nearly 800 feet of elevation gain, including a significant hill straight off the starting line, the beautiful views of the Salish Sea more than made up for that. And the good people of Orca Running produced a smooth operation that ensured the whole experience was a pleasure. (Snazzy medal and T-shirt designs, too!) If you’re looking for a destination race where the heavens and sea meet, look no further than the San Juan Island Half!

The good folks at Orca Running delivered another winner today, with a flat, beautiful course along the Green River in Kent that allowed me to *almost* PR. (The sunny weather didn’t hurt, either!) My speedy performance surprised me, but I wasn’t at all shocked that the race went off without a hitch.

My favorite parts of this event were the quality production value, the smart-looking quarter-zip race shirt, the major enthusiasm of the Orca Running staff and volunteers, and the beautiful views from the course along Lake Washington. Also, the “tunnel of love” was a fun feature. Runners should know that close-by parking can be limited in Seward Park and the surrounding neighborhood, so arriving early, carpooling, or taking public transit can make for a smoother race-day experience. I wound up taking the bus and light rail to the race, and even though I had to hit the road pretty early, not having to worry about parking make for smoother, simpler logistics.
