Chilly morning, Parked in the mall parking lot, walked to start, started in waves, course was well marked. The route took us through the cute town of Carlsbad, and then it all changed at about mile 3. That’s around the time when the ocean came into view. From there you just have to grin and bear the ocean views for miles and miles. Try to ignore the scenic beaches. Avert your eyes so you don’t notice the surfers. Do not stop to take pictures like I did. If you do not like ocean views, this is NOT the race for you.

They bus runners to the start. Most of the route is on a trail, very little cross traffic. Route well marked, plenty of water stops. Pacers for every ten minute increments. Great communication from race director up to and including day of race. T shirt is nice, nothing extraordinary. Nice medal. Not a lot of food at finish, chips and cookies, but plenty of drinks. There were plenty of race photos too. This was my 9th half marathon and in my opinion one of the best. I like smaller races and this one did not disappoint!

Race was well organized, lots of great spectators and aid stations. Did not love the out and back portions of the race. For such a large city, it seems there could have been more scenic routes we could have taken. Lots of hills, but knew to expect those. Good food and music at the after party.

This was a personal favorite of mine because I took my daughter and a couple of friends to tour the college on Saturday and then run the race on Sunday. The race course was pretty scenic, took us through lots of different neighborhoods. Finished at the capitol. There were some pretty steep hills right at the end, but they were short. The shirts we got were not great quality. Overall it was a very enjoyable race.
