The Jekyll Island course is perfect for a Boston qualifying attempt. Very flat -> 328ft elevation gain and, given the route is mostly paths and quite narrow, I only ran 0.11 miles longer than 26.2 so it was ideal for getting a best time. It’s a scenic course and I think Jekyll Island is a nice destination for a relaxing weekend.
Unfortunately, during the race, the weather was absolutely miserable. It rained the entire time. My personal hell. Light rain in the first half that got heavier in the second. The temperature was 49 degrees at the start but dropped to 44 degrees at the end. The last 10+ miles I couldn’t feel my legs nor use my hands…Couldn’t squeeze my water bottle to get water. While the course was flat, the headwinds, rain and the extra weight from soaking shoes and clothes added to the challenge.
There were sufficient hydration stations on the course (felt sorry for those brave, soggy volunteers handing out water and Powerade). Porta potties were woefully inadequate. I didn’t worry about that bc I’m used to finding a bush somewhere along the route….Until I read a couple road signs saying “Caution, Alligator crossing” 🐊 Wait, what?! Then I remembered I’m in Georgia, a stone’s throw away from Florida….So finding a safe spot became more of an issue.
The race ended at the beautiful Jekyll Island Club Resort…after-race offerings were as scarce as the Rehoboth Beach Marathon’s were plentiful. Run Jekyll just offered bottled water, chips, granola bars and plain bagels. Pretty underwhelming. No one stuck around long bc hypothermia was real.
Race shirt was unisex so when I asked for a medium, I received a men’s medium which is huge on me. The race medal and age-placement awards were nice.
If you are looking for a flat marathon in a lovely location…or gunning for a Boston qualifying time, Run Jekyll is a good choice. Recommend

This was an (emotionally) painful one as I missed a PR by 2 seconds! 😩. I ran my heart out the last 2 miles. Technically I ran faster than the last one but the Rehoboth course was 0.22mi longer. (That’s a ~2min difference for me.)
This is a flat course and no doubt there were lots of BQs and PRs for other runners. 269ft elev gain. Several miles are run on fine gravel so while the route was generally flat you don’t get the same spring from gravel as you do on asphalt so you have to work a bit harder to maintain speed.
We were super lucky with weather. It was 37 degrees at the start and temps ended at 42 but no precipitation until light rain the last couple miles. The day prior, it was snowing and raining and felt much colder.
This race gets really great reviews so I was wondering what made it special. The course is pretty. Much of it is on trails (including time in Cape Henlopen State Park) or nice neighborhoods. Hydration stations were every ~2 miles. Porta potties were woefully insufficient but fortunately there was enough woodland opportunities and that was my destination. One gripe is that there’s no timing mat at the 13.1mi mark; I don’t understand why so many marathons don’t have one. It makes figuring out your splits really difficult, particularly when the marathon course is (much) longer than 26.2mi as in this race’s case.
There isn’t an expo. It’s a bib pick-up where runners also receive a long-sleeved tech t-shirt and wrist band for the after-party.
The big wow-factor to this race is the after-party. Holy crow. They offer a buffet of mostly hot foods—waffles, biscuits, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, potato salad, macaroni salad, macaroni and cheese, salad, meatballs, hot dogs, chips, bananas, cookies, chocolate milk, soda. Then each runner is given 3 drinks/beer tickets and there is dancing and a dj in a heated tent….My one question was “who has the energy to dance”?
Lots of 50-staters doing this one, and I met one guy off to catch a flight to Kentucky to run another marathon tomorrow 😯…Serious respect for that guy.
The Rehoboth Seashore Marathon has a generous cut-off time of 7hrs and therefore is friendly to slower runners. The start and finish are 1/2 a mile a part and nearby street parking is free and ample. Given the off-season, hotels are very reasonable. This is a good one for Delaware, for a PR, for a BQ, and for slower runners. Recommend.

I came to this event not really knowing what I signed up for only to discover that this marathon is hosted by — not just any Bass Pro Shop — but the “Grandaddy of all Outdoor Stores”, founded by local resident Johnny Morris. This is the Bass Pro Shop mothership. It’s a huge, over-the-top complex complete with a Wonders of Wildlife Museum and Aquarium. The Aquarium is apparently voted the best in America.
This was a well-supported race. Lots of hydration stations, with many giving out candy, gels, M&Ms and other nutrition. There was also a beer station and pickle juice station. Good spectator support for a small city race. Beautiful crisp day with temps starting at 32 degrees at the beginning (so layering had to be thought out).
My only gripe is that they could have used more porta potties on the course so runners wouldn’t have to wait….I held out till mile 16 when I finally found a free one. It would also be nice if they had a timing mat at the 13.1 point to better calculate their front vs back half times.
The route is marked by white fish on the pavement.
Rolling hills were throughout the course (853ft elev gain) and I thought they would get the best of me but I guess I trained enough this time 🙂 bc I got a PR. I received the best 2nd place age group award I have ever seen. This thing is solid and detailed.
I highly recommend this one for Missouri if you are doing the 50-state challenge. It also has a 6.5hr cut-off so good for slower runners. Race photos are free—a nice touch.

2025 was the 49th yr of this marathon so race organizers have gotten it to a well-run operation. This is a point-to-point course going from Two Harbors to Duluth along Lake Superior. It’s a net slight downhill course but with rolling hills.
The expo was huge. Mile markers were flagged by balloons so you could see them ahead. Strawberries at about mile 22 were a nice touch. The only weak link was the after-race nutrition which was the usual bananas, apples, chips, bagels….Pork sticks were the only unique thing…And there was a beer if you wanted it which always tastes good after 26+ miles.
This was a PR for me so it was a good experience. Recommend.

Great marathon for a potential PR. Flat course. Ample hydration stations. Ample porta potties on the course (5 stars for that!) Free hot coffee at the start which was perfect while waiting in 40 degree temps. Jambalaya, gumbo and many beer offerings at the finish. The RaceJoy app that you can use to track yourself was super -> pointed out places of interest on the course plus told you when you passed each mile marker and what your projected finish time would be. Great medal. Recommend this one particularly for first time marathoners and for 50-staters.

The Barrington “Sea Me Run” Marathon was in its 53rd yr this year so it’s a pretty well-oiled production. It’s a very small, no frills event. I chose it over the Halifax marathon for NS because I spent 2 yrs at Dalhousie University in Halifax so wanted to see a different part of the province. The course runs around the perimeter of Cape Sable Island, is pretty flat (594 ft total elevation), and with few participants (~95 this year) is a fast course. We were lucky that it was mostly overcast so temps were between the low 60s to 70s. There were hydration stations every 3 km. Most had both water and Gatorade and several had wet sponges. My only complaint is that there were only 3 porta potties on the course(!)….at ~mile 5, the half way point (which doubles for ~mile 16) and somewhere around mile 20-21. It makes it tough for women (or someone w/ other issues); this is major tick country so squatting in tall grass has its risks….There isn’t much nutrition at the end: Water and bananas. Back at the Sandy Wickens Arena they served fish chowder, rolls and cookies. I came in at 4:42 and I just made it back to the Arena in time to get the very end of the chowder (even tho they have a 6-hr cut off). The shirt was a nice, unique design and the medal was nice. I wouldn’t do this marathon if you are coming “just” for the marathon and leaving. But if you are spending 4+ days here for a relaxing holiday, it is worth the trip——or if you are vying for a PR. And it’s the lobster capital of Canada so I got in 2 yummy lobster rolls.

The Banff marathon is a beautiful “holiday destination” marathon. It is an out and back course that starts in the town of Banff at ~4500ft and runners gain 900+ft of elevation over the course. There were enough hydration stations on the course if you also carried some of your own water (which I always do). Volunteers were great. Course was well marked, tho I hated the double loop runners had to do at the 11-13mile mark (painful!). The course wasn’t quite as scenic as I had hoped; yes it’s all out in the Banff National Park but much of it is going through forested areas with not as many views of lakes as I had hoped. This is nit picking as I’m comparing to the Big Sur Marathon. Compared to so many marathons, Banff is a gem. Oh and I had a bear sighting crossing the road ahead of me so there was a bit of walking which slowed my time.
The race shirt was fine; I will certainly wear it. I have 3 fundamental criticisms of the production. One is the medal is the same whether you ran the 10k, 1/2 marathon, or marathon. The second is that the after-race nutrition was the weakest I’ve ever encountered in my 17 marathons to date. They offered the tiny cups of water or gatorade that you got on the course (of course could be refilled), a granola bar, a small cookie, half banana, and a juice box. That’s it. Given the price of admission, offering pizza, or chocolate milk, or (non-alc) beer, or chips, or hot dogs, or some things of more substance would have been better. The other thing is there were few porta potties out on the course so you had to be lucky to not have to wait to use one. Doubling up porta potties would be a help.

First time visiting Saskatchewan. Very well organized event. Ran through the best of the city and probably 70% was park area. Well supported. Small expo but all vendors had their goods on sale which was great. Best after race spread I think I’ve encountered thus far, allowing runners to have Coke/Spite and chocolate milk and a couple non-alcoholic beers plus lots of food. Race photos were free. If you have a hope of qualifying for Boston this flat course is an excellent choice. Went into this nursing an injury so it was all about just finishing. Intervals were my strategy and it worked. 2nd goal was not to get further injured. 3rd goal was to not be slower than my worst time. Managed all 3.

The Rock n Roll Nashville marathon was (like all Rock n Roll events) a well-organized race. Bib and t-shirt pick up were a breeze. The expo had the usual vendors selling whatever you might have forgotten to pack. There were lots of porta potties en route. There were lots of musicians and good music along the course. Mile markers were clearly marked (though Rock n Roll miles seem to be longer than what my Garmin records which can be agonizing as the race goes on). The split-offs between the half and full marathoners were not well marked however; fortunately I saw them all and didn’t make any mistakes but wondered at the time how many people might have missed them…Seeing reports here, unfortunately a few did.
The marathon route was also one of the more interesting ones for Rock n Roll in the US. It was much more interesting than the Rock n Roll Arizona and San Antonio marathons. The marathon and half marathon started on Broadway and 8th Ave South. We ran a few blocks west and then south past Belmont University, north past the Tennessee State Capitol. We got to run around the outer field of the First Horizon Park which is the official stadium of the Nashville Sounds Baseball Club and got to see our image projected on the guitar-shaped scoreboard. The kicker was during miles 20 to almost 24 we ran two loops around Sevier Lake which had a long hill to run up twice, and at that point I wanted it to be over. We finished at Nissan Stadium, the home field of the Tennessee Titans.
For someone who trains in Northern California and on moderate hills with some regularity, the Nashville course should have seemed flat and fast. The race director warned about the first 8 miles; “take it easy on the first 8”. So while running I didn’t think the hills were terribly challenging. But the heat quickly rose and by mile 11 it was already 73 degrees with 38% humidity. I was starting to perspire at mile 1 and I don’t perspire normally that quickly. By mile 14 I knew this was not going to be a PR; in fact I was reframing the race in terms of just finishing. About mile 10, I started taking a water for me and pouring a water over my head. I took ice cold wet rags 3 times over the last half. I drank whenever water was offered and I took both offerings of pickle juice. It was all about trying to keep my body temperature down as much as possible. By the end, the temperature was 83 degrees, and I think we were within a couple degrees of the race director having to close the race. Fortunately, I don’t think anyone suffered any serious heat related ramifications (at least I checked online afterwards and I saw none reported).
My time should have been under 5 hours for this race, but the heat was a killer. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the experience (as much as one can while undergoing the pain of a marathon) and enjoyed visiting Nashville. Beside the obvious tourist draws like the Country Music Hall of Fame and Johnny Cash Museum, check out the Tennessee State Museum; it’s free and worth a visit.
