The Overlander Sports Marathon was instituted in commemoration of the fabled run of the Greek messenger Pheidippides, sent to relay the news of the victory at the Battle of Marathon. We do our best to honour his memory.
The full marathon is a figure 8 course that showcases all of Yellowknife, including Old Town, the Frame Lake Trail, and along Old Airport Road. Registration for the event includes refreshments at the aid stations, post-event barbecue, event swag for all runners, medals from Old Town Glassworks for all marathon and half-marathoners, and a great time.
The course will be marked and marshaled. You will pass by Yellowknife Bay, Back Bay and other historic areas. There will be aid stations, race marshals, race signage, restrooms and spectator support along the route. Marathoners will complete 2 laps of the course, while Half-Marathon participants will complete 1 lap. The 10 km participants will complete the first loop into Old Town of the half-marathon route (actually about 10.6 km). There will be a small short-cut required for the 10 km event (straight through the Ceremonial Circle rather than detour via the Legislative Assembly), and so the 10 km event will start five minutes after the Half-Marathon.
