If you’re looking for a New Year’s Eve run, and you live in the Orange County area, this race may do the trick–but don’t have many expectations. It’s a pretty shoestring set of amenities (water, etc) and if you’re running the half, it is 2 out and backs along a pretty bland multi-use path. While it is close to the beach, views are not very memorable. Fortunately the weather was cool and cloudy, otherwise it would have been a brutal, fully uncovered run in the direct sun. The post-race street tacos were the BEST–nothing better to end a run with.

was looking forward to running this as the 3rd leg of the SoCal Triple Crown, but Hurricane Hilary (later downgraded to a tropical storm) hit on the race Sunday (couldn’t be worse timing!) and had to move to virtual…will look forward to running it for real some time in the future!

If the weather cooperates, I don’t know if you can find many more beautiful races. Its a smooth and mostly all downhill run and goes thru forest and along the water. It was 65 and sunny with a mild breeze and I could have ran for miles more. Also a well done production–this one is a lot of fun

If you’re looking for a easy, no frills race, this is it. You can self-time and there’s few other runners to contend with. It is an “open course” however, so there’s no exclusivity for runners and you have to navigate all that goes into an early morning along the coast. Appreciate that these kinds of races exist, however!

A perfect day for a half–well put together race and course. The hill around Mile 9, however, is no joke! Be prepared to climb a bit, but once you get over it, it’s all smooth sailing. A really nice way to enter into the spring running season!

If you’re looking for a small, homespun race and you enjoy running in beautiful, natural and QUIET spaces, this is the race for you. While the production quality (swag, pre-race communication, etc) is not anywhere near other races, this race feels very community based and the way that community runs used to be (or at least how I would imagine them to be!).

There are two hills–one around 11/12 and the other at 22/23, but they are not as brutal as you might expect and very easy to walk. The biggest challenge for me was not stopping and sitting to just take in the beauty of the river and the canyon. I usually run with something playing in my ears, but the quiet and stillness of the canyon inspired me to run without any noise and just the sound of my feet hitting the ground.

This was the first year back after two off due to COVID and it showed a bit. Pre-race communication were non-existent (I wasn’t sure that the race was even happening for certain until I picked up my bib) and for runners who revel in swag, you will be disappointed. But the people who put it on are as kind as can be and you’ll feel like a part of something. Not all races can say that.

Well produced race with gentle course and lovely scenery. Be sure to wear sunglasses as you’re basically running into the (rising) sun for most of the run. The pasta dinner the evening before is probably not worth your $35 (better options in town for albeit a bit more), but the race production was top notch.

First time post-COVID for the race meant that it was not operating at ‘full strength’ and didnt feel fully managed/coordinated. Planning to run again in 2022 and hoping that everything will be back to ‘normal’. Coming from the mainland I wasn’t fully prepared for how much my toes/feet would swell from the humidity–I think I lost 5 of 10 toenails from the run. The uphill going up Diamond Head is gradual and not as hard as you would think, coming at mile 22ish.

This year’s production was really sub-par–not as many drink stations as should be and running for most of the time on the narrow Burke-Gilman was not a great idea. Especially going out and back on the same path. While this is my home route, I was disappointed in just how poorly managed the entire race felt…capped off by the medals and just being told to grab one out of the box (still in a wrapper), and the medal itself being super weak. I give them a pass due to COVID but having run 4 other races post-COVID, I can say that the production of this one was by far the worst.

This is such a well done race and a lot of fun to run. The course itself is not so hard and passes through all kinds of fun spots in the LA area. The vibe during the race is very positive with lots of spectator areas and plenty of refreshments. Even the placement of the taiko drummers on the one semi-challenging hill was brilliant.

Outstanding race production and outside of that BRUTAL hill (on an empty freeway) in miles 22-24, a great race. Fun vibe with all of the bands and the course itself looping through neighborhoods and other San Diego sites. Just make sure you conserve your energy for that last hill. If the sun is out, it’ll be a killer.
