Lost my transportation to Expo at last minute and forced into virtual race. This was my 16th year for Surf City. Missed the excitement at the starting line, the cool breeze and bus ride from the parking lot to the starting line. Included the rim of the Sante Fe Dam in my virtual route and pretended it was the Pacific Coast Highway. Next year!

This is a mostly flat course with minimal elevation gain throughout the course. The aid stations have plenty of goodies. hydration and friendly volunteers. The scenery this year was pretty brown as the area looked like there had not been any rain in a long time. This race is normally on Father’s Day weekend and usually has a lot of dads being honored by their children getting on the course with them. Pretty special. Some of that flavor was lost because this year’s race was rescheduled because of insecure government officials afraid of a bug that is not present outdoors. I am a legacy runner so obviously I would recommend this race next Father’s Day weekend.

I came in last and won the prize. I was a curve behind two runners and made a left turn when I should have made a right turn. I had less than a mile to go and wound up doing almost 17. It was my fault for not paying attention. I would definitely do this race again, At one point you are going uphill and can look at the top of the mountain and see the fast runners going along the top of the mountain with their Silhouettes against the sky, This race is one to do every year,

I like this race now that I am doing the full rather than the half. I have done the half about 7 or 8 times and the full twice now. I got behind the sweeper and then stopped and talked with people out on Sunday in their yards along the route. I did not train for a full marathon but will next year when I get a PR in the full marathon.

This race is a lot of fun. I spent time at the Expo talking to great exhibitors, walking, running, talking to friends and finally reaching the end of the run. This is the place to either qualify or take your time and enjoy yourself.

It gets hot! I am not a fan of the shirt this year because the sun turns me beet red. I met a lot of wonderful people during the run and afterwards while cooling down with the ice cream. This is the only race I know that runs you into a solid wall to force a turn around. The aid stations are well stocked with encouraging people and goodies. I will probably do it again next year.

This race chewed me up. I arrived late, got lost, added 2 miles on my run, and still finished. Gaining 4,000′ in elevation is a bit much. The first few miles are through the town so the big gain is all in the last 9 miles or so. I am going to do this again and start on time this year. And I like that you do not get your shirt until you reach the top. I will have two shirts!

This is a fun run. Most of the runners think it is a party run. They really start rolling up the sidewalks at 6 1/2 hours. There are people all along the way at all store front streets. And of course, Hollywood has plenty of people hanging out everywhere.

Met one of the Legacy Runners about mile 8 or 9. I started talking to him and walked the balance of the 1/2 marathon with him. I think he is over 80 and still doing this race each year. He is not sure how many more he will do but wants to keep it up for as long as he can. He is an inspiration for all the younger people who say it is too hard to do a marathon and wind up sitting on the couch in front of their computers or televisions.
