This race is a fun relay. I had heard that every team dresses up as a theme and really gets into it. Maybe a quarter of the race did. I would encourage you to if you race it. My ream dressed as breakfast foods and myself as a banana. It definitely added to the fun. The race was set up great for my teams 10ksh minute mile pace. We would drop someone off and move to the next stage and not have to wait long for the next person. The race took the entire day, but it went by really really fast. Overall it was a very enjoyable and well put together race.

This was a great race. It is very challenging but rewarding. I packed extra nutrition and hydration but not enough. Thankfully the course has both for runners about every 3 miles. I replenished my bag with electrolytes and pretzels at every stop. Going up was physically taxing but going down was way worse. I started to chafe right at the top and it was a problem the rest of the way down. I could really feel my breathing getting easier each step on the way back down. The downhill really beats your legs up also. The running expo and swag were disappointing, but the post race food and beer was good and the race itself was a 10 out of 10. I will probably do this race again in a few years.

This race was beautiful, because it’s in hawaii. That was the only positive that I would give the race. The expo was very small and had very little parking. The race start was a few miles from my hotel so I decided to take the shuttle. There was a mile long line of people that had the same idea as me. The race starts at 5 so at 430 having not even made it to the halfway point of the line (got there at 345) I got an uber. Once I got there the staging area was divided parallel to the course with several sets of barricades and the outhouses on the opposite side of me. I decided to wait till I saw one on the course. Well, the first set of toilets were all locked, so I wasn’t able to drop one till between mile 5 and 6. The views were great tho, and I hit sunrise right at the diamond head overlook so that was awesome. Water was staged very evenly and plentifully along with Gatorade. There was 1 gel station along the course. Finally, the finish corral was very disorganized and sprawling with various club tents. You had to leave the finishers area to get your shirt (a very rough fabric shirt that I will not be wearing) and a donut and water. Overall, the race isn’t organized, and you don’t really get much for doing it, but you are in Hawaii, so that makes up for it!

I have done this race several times now. This time was a little different. The morning started out rainy and windy. Lightning struck so the race officials canceled the race about 1/3 through. This led to some confusion among participants. We were advised to seek shelter and that buses would pick us up or we could continue at our own risk unsupported. I paused my watch and waited to see what the storm would do. After a brief pause my group decided to continue with the race, but run on the trail instead of the road because the lightning had dissipated. The rain continued throughout the day turning into a pour within the next hour. When we finished the course, we found that many of the volunteers where still waiting at the finish line giving out bags of food, drinks, and thermal blankets. We went into the old train station, got messages, then changed out of our wet clothes. Because the race was “canceled” everybody that was running in person was switched to a virtual race. I am submitting my race from the day as my virtual race. All in all I had a great time running with my group. Hopefully next year the weather is a little more cooperative!

The scenery of the black hills was amazing during the race. You also got to get up close and personal with crazy horse. The start of the race had mixed elevation and a loop that brought through the starting line 3 times. This was nice for water and shedding clothes. After leaving this area the race was downhill until mile 10ish. This was an extremely relaxing and peaceful portion of the race. It was easy to take the sights in. Then you have to turn around and run back up the trail you just came down. Along the way there were plenty of water stops, Gatorade, and bananas. The only people to cheer you on though were the people waiting for their relay partners and the volunteers working the water stations and road crossings. After mile 16ish, the map showed a net down hill. I was very excited for this, but after a few miles it seemed like all I was doing was going uphill again. If you are up for a challenge this is a great race. It is defiantly not a PR race, but the black hills are great.

This was a smaller race. It started out by pace group waves. My pacer was great, she talked with us and kept us on track the entire way. I eventually left the pacer at the end to finish faster. The course didnt have much support besides the aid stations. That was okay with me because the scenery was excellent. The course was mostly flat. Included in the course was a fasted across the dam challenge. The race finished with a pizza meal and drinks but I was to cold to stick around very long. The medals were very nice and I had a great time.
