Ran this as state #34. Had a great weekend in CDA – a lot of natural beauty.

Pre-Race: Expo was essentially a packet pickup. No issues, but not much to do. Held at a park where the races start and end, with a few vendors. Pre-race communication was clear.

Race: There were multiple races starting at the same location with the marathon starting at 6:30. It was light enough, it could have started at 6:00. Beautiful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner and we were off.

Course is essentially two out and backs. The first out and back was very scenic, although quite hilly. The course profile didn’t do it justice! You come back through the start area at around mile 16 and then head out for the second out and back. That part was not great. A grueling out with a slight grade up and no shade. The turnaround seemed like it would never come. The race finishes back at the park. Overall, I thought the course was one of the tougher ones I’ve done.

The aid stations were short with little bottles of water. The back portion was tough getting in and out of the stations as the marathon and half were both on the same course.

The finish area was festive, with reasonable post race food. There were also post race food trucks (Ice Ice Shavee – Ice truck).

Swag: Long sleeve shirt was ok. Medals are nice, but the same for all distances – the only change is the sash color.

Overall, I had a great weekend here and the race was ok. I think they could increase the aid stations, especially when it gets warm like today, but I understand it’s a small race. I’d recommend for Idaho just based on the scenery. Come for the scenery but don’t expect your fastest times!

Ran this race as state #33

Pre-Race: expo was decent for a race this size. A few vendors and easy pickup of your gear. Hoka was there offering a chance to try their newly released racing shoes on a treadmill.

Race Day: Buses were efficient and plentiful. A long ride but that’s ok. – our driver was sooo nice. The best part was that they allowed people to stay on the buses until 30 minutes before race start. Huge points there. The starting area had heat lamps but otherwise was chaos. Port a potties were lined up almost to the starting corral area. Bag drop was one truck and they just took the bags and chucked them in – not a good strategy but more on that later. Bag check ended 15 minutes before race start and people must not have known. As the truck was pulling away, people ran up and opened the bag and were chucking bags in!

Race started late without much fanfare. The course itself was nice for the early portion but fairly non-descript after mile 10ish. Volunteers were kind and enthusiastic but the aid stations were a bit of a mess. Water cups were too small for a race where temps will climb and people are likely coming in from cold areas. People ended up taking two or three cups which isn’t great for a number of reasons. Crowds were ok.

Post-race: Finishing area was a bit chaotic, but fun. Decent snacks and a lot of vendors. I grabbed a burrito from a food truck and it was worth every penny I paid. The gear check was…a disaster. The bags weren’t organized and people were waiting forever to get their gear. The volunteers finally gave up and just allowed people to go in and look for themselves.

Overall, it was fine. I didn’t think the course was blazing fast but I wasn’t trained like I should. Logistics need some work, which surprised me for a race with a good reputation.

Signed up for Las Vegas Marathon and ended up running Revel Mt. Charleston. I understand issues happen, but this wasn’t the experience I signed up for. Ending way outside Vegas rather than in Fremont was a bummer. Ok, complaints over.

The race course was a significant downhill. The scenery was beautiful at the start and then transitioned to desert scenery, also nice. The last few miles transition into the a suburb and I’ll say that the last 4-5 miles were rough. An out and back and a fairly significant climb. It also got hot – not in their control.

Race day production wasn’t great. We started 15 minutes late, which was rough standing in the cold and wind at 7500 ft. Volunteers were great, but they needed more. Most water stations were struggling to keep up with runners needs.

Swag is pretty underwhelming, especially the shirt. Medal is a bit corny, a gold roulette wheel. The post race food was great – chocolate milk, cookies, ice pop, and dots pretzels. Well done there.

Overall, a fairly underwhelming experience. This group is known for putting on great races, so I’ll give a pass on this one…I think.

Ran this as state #31. I’ve been looking forward to this one and it lived up to my expectations.

Pre-race: Flew into Denver and drove the 3 hours to Gering. Stayed at a local hotel. Expo was small, but nice. Volunteers were super friendly! Was having a calf issue and was able to get taped at the expo – a lifesaver! They were also giving out ice cream samples – YUM.

Race-Day: Easy logistics to get a bus to the start. Was able to stay inside while we waited for the race to start. Beautiful views. The course itself is great, but tough. Nice downhill start and then it levels out as you run into Gering. Rice climbs at the midpoint for what felt like a couple of miles. After a downhill section, the race transitions onto a dirt road that goes around the back of the monument. This section was tough as the road is uneven and rocky and you are completely exposed to the sun. The last couple of miles transition back to the road as you make your way to the finish. The last mile has some climbing and I was thrilled to be done.

Post-Race/Swag: Pizza and chocolate milk for the win! Nice cotton t-shirt and the medal was really nicely designed. Age group awards were a print from a local artist – very unique!

This bright sunshine, elevation, and climbs made this a tough race but the views and the friendly volunteers made it more than worth it. To top it off, all proceeds from the race support scholarships go the local community college. I’d recommend this race for Nebraska!

State #30

I love the area – the natural beauty is hard to beat.

This is a small, well produced race. I did packet pick up at the local running store – an in and out affair. Stayed in Spearfish and caught 5he bus at 4:00 (so early) to the start. I think they could push this back by 30 minutes at least.

Course starts at a golf course without much fanfare. Make sure to bring warm clothes to wear while you wait and bring something to sit on. First couple of miles are tough, as it includes a fair amount of climbing and it’s at altitude. After that, you settle in for a nice run down the canyon which is peaceful and beautiful. Aid stations were good with eager and friendly volunteers. Finishes at the city park in Sundance, and this too was a simple affair. Medal was nice. Post-race food was very minimal.

Overall, a nice race on a fast course. I had my second fastest marathon finishing time. Would recommend to anyone looking for a fast course or those 50 state hopefuls.

State #29 – Really enjoyed this race. I had high hopes and the race delivered.

Expo – pretty simple expo which is held in a hotel. Easy pickup of shirt and bib and there were vendors selling merch. The race merch looked nice with interesting designs.

Race – Logistics were good. Shuttle buses offered from a few locations, one was close to my hotel. I would just warn to get there early as the ride to the start took a while because of traffic. Gear check was easy and there were plenty of pre-race port a potties.

Course – Beautiful course showcasing a lot of different parts of the city. I personally enjoyed the back half. I love the number of green spaces in the city! The course is billed as a fast course, and while I think that is generally true, there is one sizable hill in the first half and enough rollers in the second to make it a challenge. I had 550 ft of elevation over the full marathon. The aid stations were plentiful and consistent with Gatorade first then water. Volunteers were really good as well. Crowd support was fairly sparse. The highlight of the race is finishing on the track in Heyward field. A really fun moment.

Swag – Shirt was ok. Medal is amazing. Finishers received a finisher bag and reusable water bottle. Post race pancakes were the best.

All in all, a really nice day. Would recommend.

Ran Atlanta as part of a double with Myrtle Beach on Saturday so I didn’t have time expectations.

Expo: Didn’t get there. Glad they offered race day pickup, for $20.

Race: I truly enjoyed the course. It was tough with over 1,000 ft of elevation. That said, what goes up must go down and I appreciated those downhill segments. Sometimes it felt like you had to run up a hill, only to turn and come back down the next block. Aid stations were awesome, well spaced, well staffed, and consistent in how they were set up. They offered gel and bananas on course. The finish area offered nice room to relax. The post-race food was underwhelming, with a bonus point for chocolate milk.

Swag: One of the nicest medals I’ve ever earned. Beautiful. Participant shirt was pretty good.

Overall: Very happy with the race. We had nice cool temps today, but I suspect this course would be rough in the heat. Would recommend.

2025 Myrtle Beach marathon…a nice race, although maybe a bit underwhelming.

Pre-Race: I’d describe it as a packet pick up, although with a nice vibe. It’s held at a local venue outside and the atmosphere was good.

Race: Started at 6:35, which was welcomed given the forecast for temps to reach 70. It was easy getting into the corral and things went off without issue. The half and the full share the course for the first 11 miles, so it was definitely congested. The course itself was decent. Flat course that takes you through some residential areas before getting close to the ocean. I enjoyed the middle part of the course and enjoyed the boardwalk area. After mile 17…not great. Some very exposed portions and then you get on a bike path with many areas where the roots made bumps in the path. Dangerous at that point in the race. There are a few out and backs, with the last one coming around 24,5-25.5, oof! The finish was nice and post-race in the stadium was again, a nice vibe. Aid stations were ok, although they were short and understaffed. Many times I got stuck waiting for a water. They were also inconsistent in setup with some having water first and others Gatorade. Weird.

Swag. Finished medal was nice. Race shirt was pretty bad. You do get an extra finisher cotton shirt, and that was nice. Post race food was very underwhelming .

Overall: As a 50 stater, I am satisfied. Weather is a wildcard here. It was very warm and gusting wind at the finish while temps tomorrow will be 20 degrees cooler. Not in their control, but something to consider. I’m glad I did it, but wouldn’t race back.

Enjoyed my tour of Huntsville, serving as a pacer for the 3:35 pace group.

Production was great. Easy packet pickup at the expo. Expo was smallish, but vendors that were there were quality.

Race itself was nice. Pre race staging area inside was great, especially given the rainy conditions. Course is a nice tour of Huntsville. First half has a lot of neighborhoods, but the second half is where the best parts of the course were. Space center and botanical gardens were really nice. Indoor finish was fun. Back half also has the majority of the hills – ended up with about 900 ft of elevation.

Medal is large! The only negative is the shirt. It was a decent shirt, but sizing was goofy (too small). Post race food was very good – soup, grilled PB&J, chicken strips. Excellent.

I’d recommend this race for sure. It lived up to my expectations.

Came from PA to run this as a 50 state hopeful – this is state #25, and a great way to hit the halfway point. The race starts in Wyoming and ends in South Dakota so 50 staters can choose the state they want to β€˜count’ this as. I am using it for Wyoming.

This is a small race with a limit of 100 runners. I was late to register, but the race director does a nice job of managing the entries and I got a spot off the waitlist.

Packet pickup is just that – I got mine at the running store in Rapid City and I was able to pick up a few provisions as well. Swag is a nice cotton shirt, a race branded cloth drop bag. The medal was nice size and quality. Just enough for my taste.

The race itself is a scenic trip through the beauty of spearfish canyon. Starts at the top of a ridge (saw a beautiful sunrise) and runs almost half on a gravel road before running the last half on paved road. It’s a nice downhill, and my quads reminded me of that for a solid week after. The gravel road is rocky for the first couple of miles and I obsessed about what shoes to wear – I ultimately went with a road racing shoe and that was fine. I LOVED the course and the natural beauty. It’s isolated, so expect that. Aid station volunteers had great energy and were a welcome sight.

The finish is in a local park and post race food was grilled cheese and watermelon – another win (all races should have watermelon).

I had a great time. Was able to see Mount Rushmore the Friday before the race and enjoyed Rapid City the day before –
Presidential statues were fun! I’d highly recommend the race.

Ran this race as a 50 state runner – was really looking forward to running this race.

The race expo was ok. Held at Concordia College. I was surprised to see a bit of a line, but it moved quickly – everyone was queued up to get a bib. Volunteers did a nice job moving you along. I was in and out quickly.

Race day typically starts and ends in the Fargo dome, but unfortunately not this year. I should have paid more attention when signing up as this was something I was really looking forward to. Start area was a bit chaotic and bathroom lines were super slow. I barely made it to the start.

There are 3 distances on course at once – 10K, half and full marathon. Each one has its own start time and each course differs slightly. Half Marathon started first, which was a head scratcher to me on what was predicted to be a hot day. I guess the marathon start was pushed back due to local flooding.

The course is mostly flat. You run through nice neighborhoods, a park, through Moorhead College and Concordia College. I wasn’t a big fan of all the twists and turns and out and backs. Course wasn’t marked so well and probably half the mile markers were missing. Plenty of aid stations, although it was inconsistent in where you would have water versus power aid. The roads were beat up and I worried about tripping.

The weather was warm and many areas were exposed. No control over the weather, but June is probably too late.

Finish area was underwhelming. You pick up your own pretzels, water, fruit snacks and a granola bar off a table. Easy access to the parking lot. Post race party was at Buffalo Wild Wings.

Swag was very nice. 20th anniversary windbreaker is great and the medal was big and looks very nice

Overall, it was a decent race. I commend the race organizers for revising the course quickly to avoid flooded areas. I think it was a good race – I just wanted more (specifically the dome start/finish).

Very well run race – excellent logistics, especially if you stay at the host hotel. Volunteers are amazing and they do a great job on course making sure runners are protected from traffic. Pockets of supporters as you would expect. The organizers were amazing in adjusting the start up to 6 am to protect us from the heat.

The course was tough (I won’t forget you Hillcrest). Maybe it was the humidity and the hills combined – either way, I thought it was tough. Definitely not a PR course.

The medal is as advertised and the post race food was really good.

In all, a nice day experiencing Little Rock. I would definitely recommend,

I’m not sure what I was expecting, but this exceeded it! Arrived on Saturday and was surprised at how quiet the downtown was. Stayed at a downtown hotel and everything I needed was within walking distance. Expo was fine – nice vendors and helpful volunteers.

Race day was rainy. I’d purchased VIP so I could wait in a heated tent. VIP also included a bit of food/coffee and separate ports potties. The race itself was fantastic. The course included such a variety of areas – the only constant was HILLS! I think it was one of my favorite courses because of the variety. The COU detour was…disappointing. Not well marked and spectators milling around. I’m glad to have done it and appreciate the commemorative medallion but was expecting more. the finish was fairly minimal, although I didn’t stick around too long because of the rain.the medal is huge and it’s nice they have different medals for different groups (50 states; first marathon, etc…),

All in all, I loved it. I wish I had spent a bit more time in Tulsa.

Ran this race as a 50 stater looking to knock off NH, and wow was I impressed. Of all the marathons I’ve run, this is in the top 5. Starts outside of Keene and runs downhill for a good portion, with beautiful views of the mountains and the fall foliage. Eventually you make your way into town, encountering a couple small climbs and one sizeable one. Finish is at a local college, with nice food, massage, and a great atmosphere. Swag was good, with a really nice medal.

I have such great memories of this race!

Pre-Race: Expo was decent. Had a chance to meet Deena Kastor at the shakeout run the day before the race. Lots of good dining within walking distance of the downtown hotels.

Race-Day: Probably the best logistics for a marathon ever. I stayed at a hotel downtown and was able to walk to the start. Course was fair, taking in the downtown area and then taking a big loop before finishing back where you started. Volunteers were great. Weather was good and I managed a substantial PR. Was able to get back to the hotel and shower before time to checkout. Medal was nice.

Overall, a really great experience and I’d recommend this race to anyone.
