the best sign on the course “RUNNING ON COFFEE & COVID ANARCHY”

i think the race organizers did an excellent job in this covid environment.
packet pick up was outside, no expo, you got the medal at the packet pick up to reduce congestion at finish line. Volunteers at water stations were less than normal. Course was different than previous years to make it a 2 loop for the full. Pretty course – through some nice neighborhoods and then by the river front.

They had a blue mile to honor fallen and missing military. Was very emotional.

Logistics –
stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott Old Town which was 2 blocks from start and finish. Excellent meals at
Sabor Latin Bar & Grill – simply outstanding pre race dinner – lots of vegeteraian options,
Dempseys Burger – post race burgers (yummy portabello mushroom burger option)
Pumphouse – saturday lunch option

We also spendt a couple of hours at the Sedgwick County Historical Museum – very informative about the settling in the midwest, and the start of Wichita.

Overall a great weekend.

I was glad that I was running the half marathon, since the full is 2 loops of the half (they even made the full marathoners run through the finish line)! That would have been awful. The course was nice because it highlighted historical points of civil rights and blues music. Road conditions were not so good, lots of potholes. Water and Gatorade every 2 miles. I didn’t count, but I don’t think there were as many bands as advertised. I liked the shirt. Volunteers and police officers were very nice and friendly.
Where to stay – the Westin downtown -literally ½ block from start & finish line. The friendliest hotel staff I have ever seen. They do an outstanding job and they don’t gouge you on the prices. The restaurant in the hotel, Estelle, has yummy bread pudding.
Food – Estelle at the Westin (chocolate chip bread pudding), Cultivation hall (15 min outside of the city – an upscale food court, it was ok), Drago’s (15 min outside of the city) – YUMMY!!!!!!! Iron horse Grill (a couple of blocks from the Westin) – live music and a blues history museum with decent food.
What to do – the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum – very well done, we spent over 3 hours there. Walk around the museum area to see the amazing War memorial and the Merci Train box car (WWII gift from France to the US – 49 box cars filled with gifts from the people of France, which was then distributed to each state). Walk around the city to see the beautiful city/state buildings (courthouse, Governor’s mansion, etc.) and the trail markers for the historical civil rights and blues spots. Drive out to Medgar Evers home (15min drive) and visit this historical site. Follow it up with a viewing of the movie “Ghosts of Mississippi”.

Fun Fact – Jackson, MS sits on top of a volcano and there is a marker along the race route that talks about it!

Highlight of the trip – Civil Rights Museum & Medgar Evers Home & bread pudding!

Fun destination run and a great way to escape winter weather and get your Vitamin D supply! Course could have been prettier but volunteers were exceptional, lots of water and gatorade every mile. Awesome medal. Shirt was ok (but i am a shirt snob).
We stayed at the Atlantis resort – beautiful resort with lots of activities, but you are definitely playing for it. The expo was at the Atlantis so that was very convenient. We took a taxi to the start ($20 each way, ~15 min away), but they do provide a shuttle for $20 per person round trip. Start had real bathrooms :).

The actual race was canceled the day before due to ice/snow conditions. The Race director had to make the very difficult and unpopular decision to cancel the race. But it was the right decision. The fact that RD did not wait till the morning of the race to cancel was very much appreciated. Most of our flights were canceled from origin or from the connecting airport. Hotels were very kind and forgave any cancellation policies.

RD gave several options to “make up the race” – several nearby races and a virtual race option.

Interesting Fun Fact – if you start your travel at originating airport and your flight from the connecting airport to the final destination is canceled, you can request to do a “turnaround” and go back home and they refund your full flight back (either refund or credit voucher, can’t remember)

Race – Labor Day weekend so we decided to make it a road trip from Oklahoma. Everyone though we were crazy to run a marathon in September in Mississippi, but luck was on our side. Race has an early start time (I think in the 5am hour, but I can’t remember exactly but I know it is early…. I am reviewing this race in 2020, so whatever I do remember was impactful and memorable! 😊). At the start the temp was incredibly cool….in the 50s and so we were able to know quite a few miles out in the dark & cool. Great water stops, but the best surprise was popsicles around mile 18 and cupcakes around mile 21! I normally would never have indulged, but who can refuse homemade cupcakes with sprinkles!!!!!! By the way, after the race we tracked down the cupcake lady and thanked her (Pam Britt)!! The best part of the race is the cookout at the finish line! Lots of good food to replenish the body. The course is pretty.

Where to Stay – Courtyard by Marriott – nothing special except that there is an Outback Steakhouse in the same parking lot. We usually strive to eat at local places when travelling but sometimes when you get in and have kids and have a race the next morning, Outback is a good option.

Food – the complimentary cookout after the race was delicious and then we ate barbeque in Memphis on our drive back

What to do – did I mention that the running is my least favorite part of running trips😊. Tupelo is the birthplace of Elvis Presley – they have a museum at his home that is supposed to be very well done. We did not visit the museum, just drove by it. We instead chose to spend our time outside at the Natchez Trace Parkway (part of the National Park Service) – visited the parkway Visitor center where the kids participated in the Junior ranger Program, drove the parkway, and hiked part of the Natchez Trace National Scenic Trail. Also visited Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield site and the Tupelo National Battlefield site. On the way home, we stopped in Memphis and visited Graceland, home of Elvis! We did the audio tour and enjoyed all the sights. Ate waffle cone ice-cream at the parlor shop there before getting back in the car for our drive home. Also stopped at St. Jude Hospital to see a family friend……what an amazing hospital.

Highlight of the Trip – Graceland
