  • I run because:

I can. My mother is a polio survivor and I spent my whole life watching her struggle to do things that others took for granted. Running makes me happy. I love the running community, it is so supportive!

I had total knee replacement surgery in 2020 and was told my running days were over. I have since run 8 half-marathons, many 5 and 10K’s, and in April 2023, ran the Big Sur International Marathon.  In May, I am pacing two half-marathons. Keep chasing your dreams!

Saturday- eat dinner early- around 5pm, and go to bed EARLY- by 7pm.
Sunday- Race Morning- bus pick up is 3:45am- This meant a 2:30am wake-up call for me.
PLAN AHEAD/WHAT TO PACK-
Pack something to sit on at the start line. I bought a telescoping stool on Amazon for $20- worth the money. (You can check it at gear check.) Pack some breakfast. There is no food at the start/staging area.
The starting line has water, electrolyte drink, and coffee. It is COLD & DARK at the start, so make sure you pack some sweats and a few layers for your upper body that you can take off and check into to get a check at the start. I also wore a beanie. I suggest packing some hand warmers as well.
FIRST SECTION- THROUGH THE WOODS AND INTO THE WIND
Miles 1-5 are sheltered in the woods. Once you hit the coastline, you will deal with the winds. I was told from a 15 time veteran that the wins this year were the worst she’s ever experienced. We had about 8 miles of pretty extreme wind.
HILLS & LIES-
There are a LOT of HILLS. The elevation chart lies a bit, there are hills all throughout this race.
FUN-
I “Lost” about 15 minutes taking pictures, stopping to listen to some of the musicians, and I even pet a Shetland pony around mile 20. This race is completely awesome. It is incredibly beautiful, there are really fun aid, stations, and the vibe of the people is amazing. Immerse yourself in the experience, and don’t worry about your finish time.
WILD WINDS-
Pack a good windbreaker, and be prepared for the wind. The winds were wild and cold. I suggest that you WEAR A VISOR instead of a hat. I had to pull my visor down below my chin several times, so it did not blow off my head. I saw around 20 people lose their hats during this race. The hats flew right off their head into the ocean.
FUEL and HYDRATION-
Take in gels or fuel every 4–5 miles, the climbing and the wind will really suck up a lot of calories. Because I kept on top of my nutrition, I never hit the wall. Make sure to remain hydrated as well.
First and foremost, have fun. This is one of the most amazing marathons you will ever do.
PREPARATION & TRAINING-
-Do upper body strength training 2-3 days a week for 10 minutes or so. You will appreciate the strength as you climb the hills and run against the wind!
-Throw some hill running into your weekly routine, and work on your power walking. There is technique involved, and you can find some YouTube videos from some excellent trail runners.
Note: I had total knee replacement surgery in 2020. If you work hard for what you want, and chase after your dream, you will amaze yourself with the rewards you will enjoy. This race was a dream come true for me. My first marathon since my surgery. This is my “redemption run”.

The unique rock formations are totally rad. The race has a low key, local feel. The medals are awesome and I get lots of use from the sturdy, colorful, drop bag. The hills are hard, so prepare to climb! The real race starts at the 5K mark.
The free race pics are quite epic! This is an unforgettable event.

This is a fast, scenic course with really fun swag. It’s a run by a small company that does more than expected. The shirts and medals are always fun for every race they put on. The gifts for the top finishers are awesome!
This is a great event for first timers and families. They even have shirts for the kids race!
The ice cream truck at the finish was a tasty treat- thanks for the non-dairy option!
Come join the fun next year!
I had total knee replacement surgery two years ago, so this Sugar Daddy victory was extra sweet!!

I would recommend this race, awesome medal, fun shirt. I love the course but it’s hard and hilly. The phrase on the shirt has horrible grammar, they need a good proof reader. The graphics are great. They need a women’s version though. I was swimming in a size small.

This race is very scenic. The volunteers are awesome. You spend a lot of time near the beach. You pass all of the scenic areas of Long Beach: the convention center with Wyland murals of ocean animals, the Pike, the aquarium, the light house, Queen Mary, etc. There are a few moderate hills. The finish line is great, plenty of spectators, and nice treats at the finish. The medal is awesome every year.
