The nonprofit Napa Valley Marathon, Inc., is thrilled to launch a new summertime race in our beloved Napa Valley, the WineShine Half Marathon & 3.9-Miler. The new race will start and finish at the Silverado Resort & Spa. The course runs along the famed Silverado Trail, passing by sweeping vineyards, beautiful hillsides, and iconic wineries along the way. After the race, participants will gather on the grounds of the Silverado Resort to enjoy complimentary wine tasting from a sampling of local vintners, listen to live music, and celebrate their finish.
During the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020, NVM Inc. dreamed of getting back to work. Out of their wistful conversations came the creation of the WineShine Half Marathon. The WineShine Half Marathon and 3.9-Miler was created to celebrate summer in the Napa Valley and what this region is best known for, wine! The summer races will support community causes to include Napa Firewise and the Napa Valley Farmworker Foundation.
The WineShine Half Marathon strives to maintain the NVM, Inc. level of excellence and offer the best running experience to runners in one of the most beautiful regions in the world.

The WineShine Inaugural half was fantastic. The race starts and ends at the Silverado Resort. The course is flat except for the hill at mile 12. The course is mostly an out and back with aid stations every two miles. Water and electrolytes at every aid station. We ran past vineyards, wineries, and lovely scenery. I really enjoyed this course and race. After the race, there was plenty of local wineries providing samples. It was a great day and I will definitely do this race again.

This race is like a spa day for runners. A beautiful location starting and finishing at the Silverado resort. Every detail was thought through and the amenities were amazing. The course is fairly flat other than the final mile. It’s a long out and back, so if you are running not with the middle of the pack, you can be solo for a lot of the race. Not a bad thing, but good to be prepared for a quiet long out and back with beautiful vineyards as scenery.

This is my second formal time 1/2. My first 1/2 USA 1/2 was disappointing. This Wineshine blew me away. Everything was so very well organized, the swag was off the chart, and the events all were not crowded, I seriously could go on. We ran as VIPs and were treated like VIPS. My only disappointment was the happy hour was truly just an hour and I didn’t realize there was a speaker. I missed it completely. My Daughter in Law and I were talking about doing it again. The course was relatively flat until the finish when we had to run uphill. “Who does that?” LOL.
This was my new favorite race!

The race experience was phenomenal! I signed up for the VIP experience and the VIP area/gear check was so easy to access and use. The volunteers went our of their way to make it easy to get in a warm up and not have to worry about logistics. This was true for my friends who did not purchase the VIP package too. There were plenty of clean bathrooms to use before the race and a selection of pre-race food and coffee. The courses itself was relatively flat and fast with minor uphills and downhills until there was a significant climb from 12 to 12.5 miles. It is not the fastest course in the world but one could still run a PR on a good day. I think I ran about 30-45 seconds slower than I could have on a pancake flat course given my fitness level and how I felt on race morning. There was a ton of volunteer support out on the course and the energy was really positive. Also, the weather was perfect despite it getting hot later in the day due to the early start. The post race experience was quintessential Napa Valley. There were plenty of booths where you could taste wine and there was a gourmet breakfast spread in the VIP area. The wine tasting area also featured live music. My wife was there as a spectator (I bought an extra wine glass so she could participate in the post race festivities) and she said it was the best experience she has ever had while watching one of my races. It didn’t hurt that the Silverado Resort is stunning. As a cherry on top of the whole experience I was able to finish the race in second place and instead of winning another medal that I would stick in a drawer (although the finisher medals came complete with utilitarian wine stoppers!), the prize was a specially engraved magnum bottle of pinot noir! I would recommend this race to anyone from a serious runner to a first time half-marathoner (or 3.9 miler for that matter). It is also an event that you could turn into a vacation as it provides a great reason to visit the Napa Valley and with the event on a Saturday morning you can enjoy the weekend afterward.

Even though this was the inaugural WineShine Half Marathon, the coordinators, volunteers, and vendors made it seem like they’ve been doing this for at least 50 years. Starting area was organized with plenty of bathrooms. Course was well-marked, and the volunteers at the aid stations were awesome! The after party was super fun, although I wish they would have invited some snack vendors as well. Would definitely run this race again!

The location is incredible! The Silverado resort is all the opulence you’d expect from Napa. Don’t worry about running in Napa in July: the race is early enough in the morning that even for fair skinned people like me the heat isn’t bad.
The swag afterwards was far beyond what I expected: best of any race I’ve been to!
As far as improvements, I could barely hear the emcee at the beginning of the race, and I wish there was a little more space at the post-race festival, especially as the race grows in popularity.

The weather in Napa is hot during the day, but the cloud cover and rolling fog from San Francisco hovers over the area at night and the early morning, so it was actually a cool race in the middle of summer
The course itself, while it is an out & back, started down one loop and then returns via a different area. Running the Silverado Trail is a total dream – mostly flat with vineyards on each side.

We were SO excited to participate in the first ever WS half marathon. Napa’s morning weather is perfect: cool, slight breeze, a little fog. Course is relatively flat with a couple steep (but short) hills at the end. Finish off the race in the wine garden with tons of vendors on a beautiful resort. We will absolutely be running this race again next year.
