So this race date changed a few months after they announced it (and we all signed up for it) to the prior week. No email was sent out, no push notifications, one of us just signed in and saw the date was different one day. But only on SOME off the official pages. And our first couple of emails we basically just got an “I don’t know” response. It’s YOUR race. How do you not know? That level of amateur hour didn’t work for about a dozen of us, so we switched over to virtual. The race course is the same Westport race it always is, minus a brief little tag-on out and back halfway through to make up for some area lost to construction at the start. Now from what I hear the post race party was nice, as it always is, because Westport knows how to show up for an after party. The medals were pretty, but were a cheap sticker-on-plastic design, so we epoxied over them so the humidity wouldn’t cause the sticker to peel. The tshirt was actually really soft, and a brownish gold color that is rarely used. I’ve already worn it twice, so good on whoever picked that out. Maybe let them help with the medals next year.
This is a staple race that has spanned multiple decades. I don’t know why the ball was dropped so hard this year. New staff maybe? Will I try again next year? Absolutely. Am I going to be ready for more amateur hour shenanigans? Unfortunately, also absolutely. If they can pull the race off like it used to be though, it’s a great race on a great course, and a couple blocks are shut down afterwards so people can go from bar to bar and celebrate St Patty’s Day safer, so do consider giving it a shot. Just write the date in pencil.
