The Umstead 100 Ultra is a 100 mile endurance run through the William B. Umstead State Park in Raleigh, NC. There’s also a 50 mile option.
The Umstead 100 Mile Endurance Run is designed to help new ultra runners make the leap from 50 mile runs to the more demanding 100 mile runs. It enables runners who have difficulty finishing 100 miles in 24 hours, or just finishing 100 miles at all, the opportunity to do so when severe topography, heat, and getting lost are removed as major obstacles. Many runners find the Umstead 100 an excellent foundation for the Massanutten 100, Western States 100, Leadville 100, and Wasatch 100 runs.
The run (100 miles or 50 miles) must be completed in 30 hours.
There is a soft cutoff time of 26 hours (8:30 am, Sunday) at the 87.5-mile point (the start of the last lap). Any runner who continues after that time/point is not guaranteed support, depending on their pace. Runners electing to continue after the soft cutoff will be asked to sign a waiver acknowledging that on-course support may not be present when they reach the water point and remote aid station.

This event is so well-organized, there is almost information overload!
I intended to run this as my first 100-mile event, but unfortunately, a plantar tear had me hobbling and I could barely even walk the last few miles needed to get to the 50-mile mark. Fortunately, they do not count this as a DNF, rather, they move you to the 50-mile event. You then get the 50-mile finisher’s coin.
A VERY nice personal touch was receiving physical race photos in the mail a couple weeks later…for free!

The race has been around for a while and runs smoothly. There are a ton of volunteers and they make sure the runners as well as their crews are taken care of for the duration of the race.
The course is a wide, crushed gravel path so there are no issues passing and no technical sections with rocks and roots. It is a 12.5 loop that you run 8 times. There are 3 good climbs on back half, but none are too steep or too long.
I highly recommend this race.
