This wasn’t two laps. I can’t express how happy I was of that, when it was the hottest day I’ve run all year and the 5k route has very little shade. What it is, is a great course through the lake area, then off down the path into the woods for the second 5k. This is one of those races that everyone in the community shows up for. I’m not always sure, to be honest with you, because I find the 5k on paper to be a pretty mid course that’s a long drive for me, but with the large crowd and great production, the energy is contagious. We all had to push this day. The sun was oppressive, but I had the honor of helping a friend push 225lbs of child and stroller. It’s actually something I’ve wanted to do for a while, but after my heart attack it was always a matter of “ready for that extra work?”…well I guess so. To be honest I think it actually kept my pace faster than it would have been otherwise, because so many people dropped down to the 5k last minute, the 10k course could get a little lonely, and in this heat I’d otherwise quickly lose my motivation.
GOODR provides free sunglasses to all the participants, and while they ran out of shirts due to a production hiccup, they promised to get them to us when they were in stock.
It’s hot. I know. There’s no wind for some reason after the first mile. Ever. I know. It is fun though, and there are plenty of other people on the course to convince you of that fact if you start to falter. It’s worth giving it a try at a time of year when good races are hard to come by anyway.

Cooler than last year, this modified figure 8 at Longview Lake had just enough breeze to speed up the hills and make it nearly a PR. There was one basic aid station which was enough today, thanks to the break in the heat. A couple short but steep hills with a small gradual uphill finish. The medal was nicely designed, early registrants had the option to get sunglasses and the tshirt was a soft cotton. Good solid 5k on a course that is underused. Not particularly special though.

Difficulty? Everything is difficult this week. The course was sunny and open, so no shade to speak of, and wind was intermittent. Nothing they can control.
I do have a problem with whatever was at the water station that was clear and not water though. My buddy and I both slammed a shot of it thinking it was water and immediately tasted the salt of Gatorade or something like it. Not a huge issue (if you’re not a heart patient monitoring your sodium), but I was real close to splashing my face with it instead and that would have sucked in the eyes. The volunteer didn’t warn anyone that it was anything but water, and when we asked what it was the answer was pretty much “I don’t know.”
The medal was really gorgeous for a 5k and the shirt logo was flashy and late 80s/early 90s vibe to it. I can see doing this race again if the medals remain on that caliber.
