This was my first trail race, so I may just have skewed expectations, but I was a disappointed in the second half of the race. (The first half was beautiful, part was on a paved path, then went into the woods and next to the river), we did that loop twice, then went beyond. The beyond part felt like I was running through logging/construction path. I got lost once too because I couldn’t find a marker, I was getting the markers confused with the flag sticks the construction had all over the place. (I think I ran a little extra while I was lost, but my watch still ended up about 3/4 mile short of 13.1 at the end).
The aid station at mile 9 was stocked with such yummy food though! The best!
The finish line area was very underwhelming. No medal, no t-shirt (I want to be able to have swag so I can remember this awesome accomplishment! I would even pay extra for the option of swag). I was super bummed with the finish line food too, not much selection, and the water was warm. (I wish the aid station food could have been at the finish line too!) When I read the description, I thought there would be lawn games all over with people playing, but there was none of that (I think you had to pay for it with Suncadia? And maybe people thought it would be included too? I don’t know)
Overall, I had a great time at my first trail race. Nothing was bad enough to make me not enjoy myself. I see the potential of this race though, it could be The Best!

Awesome first race to get introduced to trails. The event planners were friendly, cheerful, and organized making for a great experience. The only down fall was lots of construction on the trail making it less scenic than hoped for but overall it was a great experience.

    Beautiful scenery!

ZERO cups available for water even if you forget yours!!! Super disappointing especially at mile 9 to find this out (and I appreciate being earth friendly but at least have some compostable cups available for those who forget their water bottles!)

Some confusing parts of the race (several people not sure which way to go).

And only lukewarm water available at the end! Yuck! The least we should have is ice cold water available after running for 2+ hours!

Microphone/speakers weren’t working properly, so many of us couldn’t hear the pre-race instructions (myself included). Look at the course map in advance. Staff were on the course where you move from 1st loop to 2nd. I followed two runners off the course around mile 11 (near a construction area) and the 3 of us got lost/reentered an earlier part of the 2nd loop. I was disappointed with the trail markers, but everyone else seemed to find their way just fine. Even with the extra distance/10+ minutes I spent lost, my total mileage at the finish was a 1/2 mile less than 13.1 according to my watch (I’d seen previous runners report this too). I love the area, staff was friendly/made an effort, but overall I was disappointed with the organization of this race.

Communication from the event was good, everything ran smoothly. Overall it’s a beautiful and challenging course. I had great views of the river from down below and up top. Half marathoners run the 5k loop then come back around and run a 10 mile loop. Got to see some of the course a second time (which I didn’t care for). And had to climb the same giant hill a second time (also didn’t care for, lol). And while there wasn’t a whole lot of course support (2 aid stations), they were fully stocked with typical trail running fare. I was very underwhelmed by the finish line celebration. Bagels, bananas, and muffins were the only things offered. Beverages were to be purchased. And no race t-shirt, or medal (kinda bummed about that). Given a generic wooden magnet that I’m sure all half marathoners and 5k finishers received.

The first loop of the race was gorgeous and the views for most the race were the same. The last 3 miles were not as pretty as the rest, but they were mostly flat which was great. Evergreen Trails is one of the best running organizers in general and this run did not disappoint! Great treats/hydration during and after the race, well-organized, and appreciated that it was a cupless race.

The Suncadia Half and 5k event takes place on mostly well groomed paved and gravel trails with some unimproved dirt trail stretches. There are 2 loops to this course with the 5k loop being the start of the half. A couple miles into the half, runners take a turn and complete another loop before returning to the original loop to complete the distance.

The course is mostly flat with some downhill and one large uphill. The uphill stretch is run in it’s entirety once for both the 5k and half and is broken into two parts for the second pass by the half marathoners (the junction being part way up the hill). Enough about the hill though because it was not bad in the long run. It being held in August means temps may be pretty warm even at an early race time, but the water stations help keep runners hydrated.

Like all Evergreen Trail events, this was a great set up and production. The standard Evergreen coaster as the swag. There were events for kids to do aside from the activities already on-site at the Nelson Farm location. And, since this event is located within the Suncadia Resort footprint, it makes for a perfect vacation run destination!
