Let me start by saying I loved this race, and it is always nice to do a new course that isn’t recycled for a dozen other races. It is hosted by a local dog rescue, so in line with that it is a very dog-friendly race, and probably more people had dogs than didn’t.
Now the bad part. The gun and chip time read the same, which isn’t possible since I started in the back pushing a stroller with a little dog in it (I borrowed one from a friend who didn’t think she could push two on the race, so we each took one….great idea!) Anyway, my phone’s Strava showed 3.4, and chip and gun time are identical. That put our official pace way slower than I know we were doing, because I was going a very familiar recovery pace for me.
With that out of the way, it IS a good course from Brookside down to part of Hospital Hill course, and back up…pretty much 1.5 downhill, 1.5 uphill a little bit of flatland at each short end of the boxed loop. Nice change of pace, and all the puppers on the course made for a win. This race can be done two ways: You can go out there and take advantage of the long downhill, bank some time for the return, and put in some real effort for a PR. Whether it’s reflected in your time or not is a coin toss I guess unless you start first. The other way is go out and treat it as a recovery run or a shakeout, enjoy all the dogs on the course, and have some great conversation with great friends (or make some new ones on the course).
There is only a 5k option at this race, but the swag is 10k-worthy, easy. Super soft T and great medal. Just take the “official time” with a grain of salt. Enjoy the dogs on the course. Enjoy the craft adult beverages, locally roasted coffee, oranges (take all you want!), bananas (take all you want) at the end with probably over a dozen dog-themed vendors present. Kiddie pools are available for puppers to cool off as well. There a bunch of great places to eat at within walking distance after the race, as well, some of which are dog friendly (Thanks Red Door, Heirloom!)
