EVENT DISCONTINUED FOR 2018. From race website: We have made the difficult decision to not return to Brooklyn in 2018. A decision like this is never easy and we understand the disappointment this may cause for participants planning their 2018 race calendars. We are grateful for the time we have … MORE

This was the worst half that I have run. The packet pick up was difficult to get to and underwhelming. We had to go through security to get to the start, but we were not secure from and spectators. There was nothing to look at while running. Tons of cheaters, why bother running at all?

The problems of the 1st year (2015) are long gone. This race now runs as smoothly as a typical Rock N Roll race.

The expo is in Manhattan. Getting to/from the race (in Brooklyn) can be challenging (with subway changes, etc.). This is one of the few Rock N Roll weekends that is a single day–you can do either the half marathon or the 5-miler (both start at the same time). Rock N Roll gives a decent shirt and a fun medal. Finish line area is in Prospect Park–beer garden, finisher concert, hang out on the lawn.

This was my first race so I had no idea what to expect. The expo was small but was in a great location in downtown Manhattan and the course was reasonably scenic. It has inspired me to do more in the future and someday I hope to tackle a full marathon.

Huge improvement over the inaugural race in 2015.

They changed the expo (moved it to a more convenient location in Manhattan). They improved the start line experience, so it started on time. Though, this is the 1st race I remember going through a metal detector – and there was a LOT of security. I liked the shirt better last year. But Rock N Roll does good medals!

2015 was the first year that Rock ‘n’ Roll had a half marathon distance race in Brooklyn…and it showed.

Staying in Brooklyn, it was very easy to get to the race start and to the hotel from the race finish by subway. The expo, however, was on the other end of Brooklyn and was small, had very few vendors, and was half outdoors (it rained later that afternoon so some folks got wet).

On race morning, there were not nearly enough security points for the number of participants nor enough porta potties. The course itself goes through Brooklyn neighborhoods, ending in Prospect Park (where really the only course hills are..and what a doozy of a hill it is).

The race swag was nice. A cute tech tee and spiffy medal that was also a bottle opener.

For 2016, Rock ‘n’ Roll was changing the course a bit, changing the expo, and hopefully remedying the other issues the 2015 race had.

You always take a chance when you do an inaugural race. And Rock ‘n’ Roll races, that are oversold IMHO, can be particularly challenging. The first challenge with this race is getting to the expo. Then the expo itself was oddly laid out – race shirts and goody bags were outside at the exit. The race itself started 30 minutes late. The course was entirely too narrow for 18,000 runners. For a Rock ‘n’ Roll event, it was surprisingly lacking in course entertainment. The finish area – in Prospect Park – wasn’t adequately signed, so it was difficult to figure out how to leave. Rock ‘n’ Roll medals are nice, as are their shirts. They will probably work through some of the kinks for next year.
