The course is through a beautiful area and worth it just for the scenery. Most of the race (70-80%) is on trails which are rocky in places and have some short, steep hills (both up and down). You may want to wear trail running shoes. There was some difficulty in busing the runners to the start line in Arrowtown and the start time had to be pushed back. The weather was varied (cold, hot, rainy, windy, and even some sleet). The entrance fee is inexpensive, so the swag only consisted of a medal, a banana and a beer at the finish. Although there were plenty of food trucks where you could purchase food.

Scenic Half-Marathon in the Adventure Capital of the World! Amazing destination race for Individuals, groups, couples and families. There is something for everyone in Queenstown.
Race was well supported and point to point through fields, hard packed trails and roads. Shaded and stunning. Make sure you stop for pictures! On the hilly side and finishes with a hill through town.
A bucket list adventure. Plan to stay in Queenstown for some fun before or after.

Traveling to New Zealand isn’t easy (or rather, it takes a long time to get there). Don’t let that scare you off. It isn’t that bad. Most likely, you will need to fly into Auckland first. Not a bad idea to spend a day or two there before coming to Queenstown.
Queenstown is an absolutely place with lots of options for active travelers. You can bungee jump off the bridge where bungee jumping was born. There is zip lining, rafting, luge, and gondolas plus wine tours and visits to beautiful locations used in Lord of the Rings, Mission Impossible, and other movies. You should visit Fergburger–well known for their burgers–it is worth the wait.
The expo is small (and a bit disorganized). The medal was better than I expected. Race morning there is a shuttle to the start. The start area (for bag drop, port-o-potties, etc) was surprisingly a bit away from the start line. I wish the race would have started earlier (the marathon goes off at 8:30am, after the 10k and half marathon start). The course is beautiful, but hilly. Don’t let the “flat out beautiful” slogan of the race deceive you! Decent finish area, though they were out of some things (including the beer I wanted!) but the time I finished.
It really was a spectacular running vacation. I enjoyed myself immensely and I would highly recommend this adventure for any runners who love traveling to new places.

I would recommend this to anyone who can get distracted by beautiful scenery and it is simply stunning. They took the big hill out – a shame really but it was in a nasty place – towards the end. Expensive to enter and for accommodation but I guess that’s New Zealand. It can get a bit windy around the lake. Although it is mostly off road it is hard packed trail and trail shoes are not needed. The medal was pretty nice and the start was well organised.
