In 2010, the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission took ownership of the Prairie Fire Marathon, which had previously been known as the Wichita Marathon. For the first time, not only was a full marathon race offered, but also a half marathon, 5K, youth marathon and one-mile walk. In 2013, we expanded into the spring running season offering a half marathon, 5K, Sparky’s kids mile and a fun run/walk. Both the spring and fall events make up the Prairie Fire Race Series.
The Prairie Fire Spring Half Marathon is a USATF Certified Race. This single loop begins north of Century II then heads west toward Friends University. From there, runners pass through the historic Delano District before running along the river and through Riverside Park, Oak Park, and Sim Park.
The Prairie Fire Spring 5K is USATF Certified Race, single loop design. The race begins north of Century II, heads south along the river, and then loops back north towards Riverfront Stadium. Runners will take in the sights of the historic Delano District before heading to the finish line.

Well organized and medium sized. It was well organized and a fun fast run. I was able to walk from my hotel and enjoyed the scenery. I also had a great time visiting many things in Wichita and the surrounding area!
One of my favorites!
Fun race! Free photos, and 3 hotels within walking distance of the start/finish line area. I have run this race 6 times and had a great experience each time. MORE

This was my first time completing Prairie Fire. The host hotel was literally at the start/finish line. The hotel staff was amazing. The course itself wasn’t anything memorable, so nothing horrible or amazing. The post race food and crowd is amazing! Definitely a great race! I would recommend this one to anyone! Especially if you are close to Wichita, this is great because their “back to back” is a May and October race.
