This race was completely unplanned and a last-minute decision. It was my very first trail race, climbing mountains and running through rugged singletrack. The course was originally designed for international mountain bike competitions, making it one of the most challenging routes I’ve ever experienced.
Many experienced trail runners from across Puerto Rico competed alongside me, and even they agreed that the course was extremely demanding. We faced rocky sections, exposed roots, wet and loose dirt, steep climbs, and hot, humid conditions that tested everyone from start to finish.
Although it was my first trail race, it became one of the most meaningful races I’ve ever done. It took place in my home country, Puerto Rico, in a town that I love with all my heart. At the finish, my Garmin Forerunner recorded a distance longer than a 5K (3.33 miles). The next day, we returned to run the exact same route again, and once more it measured longer than 5K.
Without a doubt, I would do this race again. It was an incredible experience, one that challenged me physically and mentally, and one I will never forget.
