If you are looking for a big city production this isn’t it, but if running is your main objective you will like this one.

Great aid stations, good point to point race. lots of shuttles, about 400-500 runners.
Community support was disappointing. Because it went through main roads there were cars just edging their way through the runners. One was even revving past and another just going way too fast to be near those on foot. For that reason I may not do the race again. But of course i want to compare my improvement from one year to the next so i may do it again for that reason. Vistas are beautiful- some parts smell farm-funky- but that’s part of the countryside!

The Park to Park Half Marathon course is simply bucolic in its setting. I was constantly taking in the pastoral countryside, the bubbling creeks, and the amazing Blue Ridge mountains. Someone used this wonderful backdrop for a mid-race proposal my first year running the race! (He popped the question at mile 9… Did she finish the race after saying “Yes”??)
The race organizers do a great job from packet pick up, race logistics (its a point to point race), and the after-race party. I’m a confessed Garmin data freak and I appreciate the consistent mile markings on the course! (Super happy that the uphill finish is no more too.) The course has one significant hill and plenty of rollers — but it’s still a great route for newbies and PR-seekers! Solid swag too with shirt/medal/finishers hat.

I hate down and back races and the Park to Park folks worked hard to create an amazing race that is NOT a down and back. They orchestrated a gorgeous course with beautiful scenery and good aid stations. Only comment is that there could have been a few more restrooms at the start of the race – though I know they increased in from years past.

This race is right in my backyard, and for years I’d heard how terrific it is. I decided to give it a shot, and see what I thought about it. The course is relatively flat. There are some hills and some are fairly brutal, but it’s nothing that can’t be done. The biggest ones are in the beginning and they look daunting, but what goes up, must come down, so there’s that. There are gorgeous mountains and farmlands to look at while you run, so the distractions are nice. I also liked that there were support stations along the way. While this isn’t a huge race where the streets are lined with cheering people, there are people who come out and root on the runners. I love this race and it’s one that I recommend to friends to do. The weather can be wonky, so expect anything. One year it was hot, and the next there was freezing rain, but it’s spring in Virginia!
