This is my 2nd 5k in Clinton in less than a month. Normally I wouldn’t drive 1+ hour for a 5k, but Clinton is a quiant town worth exploring. This time around, jkelling and I made a day of if and did the Clinton Half marathon virtually, since it was cancelled a few weeks ago. The day trip was definitely worth it.
Olde Glory Day 5k is part of the town’s carnival. It was the first time this race was done in the evening, and I am grateful for the evening run. Packet pick-up was quick and easy. The royal blue shirts matched the heavy medal. I only wish the medal ribbon was more than a generic red, white, and blue ribbon. A well-designed ribbon would have put this medal over the top.
The course starts yards away from the carnival with an immediately downhill. My hope for negative splits were crushed as the humidity reared its ugly head on the slow uphills. I am grateful for the sunset as I only had to deal with the mugginess and not the direct sunlight. Jkelling killed the 5k and I am not surprised as he is on a summer roll.
Unfortunately, the course was a third of a mile short. Many of the regular crew ran in circles (jkelling) or down the street to make up the distance. I was ready to head down the hill again, but opted for the flat side street instead. Would my time have been better if I ran the course as is? Definitely. An honest 5k distance was the better choice.
Crossing the finishing line was a treat as I grabbed my medal from the table, water from the cooler and posed for the finish line photo. Although it was late, and I had a 5k the next day, a stroll around the carnival was obligatory. I will have to make sure to hit up the carnival beforehand.
For the explorers, check out Redfox Winery 20 minutes down the road. It has some great wine, wonderful owners and the perfect place to spend the afternoon and grab a bite to eat.

The course measured 2.67 so I had to turn around and go back out. The shirt is a heavy cotton, and the medal was actually really nice, especially for a 5k. It’s a lollipop course, and being Clinton, it is hot and hilly, but it’s a good course that really opens up to some great energy.
