The Old Turnpike Half Marathon takes place at the one-of-a-kind Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike! Featured in a movie, once billed as the “World’s Greatest Highway”, and surrounded by the stunning scenery of Buchanan State Forest and the Allegheny Mountain Range, this half marathon is a must! Run through the 1.26 mile long Sideling Hill tunnel and the kilometer-long Rays Hill tunnel.
Course Safety Statement
Please be aware that this stretch of road has not been recently paved, therefore, parts of the pavement are rough at times. In addition, head lamps are required to be worn when running through the tunnels. These tunnels are dark, can be slippery, and running through them without a head lamp can be dangerous. Wolf Creek Race Management staff will remove as much debris as possible from the road prior to race day. Portions of the road have significant graffiti. Warning: Some of this graffiti contains obscene language and graphics. Participation among children 17 & under is prohibited.
Portable restrooms will be placed in the Cove Valley Travel Plaza parking lot and along the course.
Aid Stations with refreshments and first aid kits will be available along the course.
Race Parking is available at the Cove Valley Travel Plaza alongside the Old PA Turnpike. The start & finish line is less than 200 meters from this parking lot.
Awards will be given to the Top 3 Overall Male and Female Open & Masters Finishers as well as the top 3 male and female finishers in the following age groups: 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+. There will be no in-person award ceremony due to Covid-19. All awards will be mailed.
COVID-19 Statement
This event happened in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and will happen again in 2021 barring additional restrictions. At Wolf Creek Race Management, we take COVID-19 very seriously. We will do everything in our power to offer a safe and fun event for all participants. We have taken several steps to ensure the safety of all participants, staff members, volunteers, and spectators. These steps in accordance with PA-state government & CDC guidelines include:
- Limiting High Contact Points
- 30 Minute Window Start
- Encouraging Social Distancing
- Disinfecting Commonly Touched Surfaces
- Providing Pre-Packaged Food and Drinks
- Requiring Participants to Wear Masks when Social Distancing is Impossible
- Making Hand Sanitizer Readily Available
- Wolf Creek Staff Members Wearing Masks
- CDC COVID-19 Signage Displayed at the Event
This event was approved during the pandemic and will occur as long as Pennsylvania remains open for outdoor gatherings. If this event is no longer able to occur due to COVID-19 restrictions, all participants will receive a full refund. Refunds for any other reason will not be granted.
