Okay this is like the training wheel version of Rugged Maniac/Tough Mudder/whatever other big ones are out there. Don’t expect the same level of fitness required and don’t expect as complicated of obstacles. I went with some friends and once we saw what was what, we adjusted fire to where we were and everything was great, we enjoyed ourselves, and we’ll probably go back.
That said, the course was only 1.3 miles…maybe 1.4, so the advertised 2.8M, not even close. The section through the woods was pretty though, I’ll give them that. Most of the obstacles were some variant of “cross this slick muddy puddle to climb that muddy hill.” Monkey bars and rope swing were there, along with cargo net and wall climb, but I think that was about it. The end of the course was on a dirt (auto) racetrack and finished though an arch with a bubble machine above it.
The shit was a standard white cotton T with design on it and the medal was decent (medal, not acrylic, which I was afraid would happen given the somewhat low-rent nature of the event. If possible, park outside and jog in, one, to save the $20 parking fee and two because it will take you much, much longer to try to drive out of the parking lot than it would for you to walk that mile (or less) to get back to your car from a local store.
For the $30 bucks or so I paid for it, yeah I had fun and I’d probably go back with a group of friends. Alone? Probably not. If you’ve never done an obstacle course race, by all means please do this one. It has a better course than a great many other similar productions I’ve seen.
For some odd reason, despite saying food trucks on site in the literature, there was only one concession stand, and there was a sign up saying “no food available” (only drinks). I guess all the bratwurst I smelled cooking must have been some restaurant around the corner or something. I don’t know.
This race is like the weird uncle who day drinks and falls down a lot, talks about ducks and sits on the bench by himself. May seem a touch off, but fun to have around. For that, I’m giving what mathematically should probably be 3 stars an extra star. Do this race. Do it for the ducks in all of us.
