This is a race that is point to point from Lewiston, NY to Youngstown, NY in Western NY. My brother moved to Buffalo so I was looking for a race near Buffalo this Fall and this one worked well with my schedule and also conveniently had race day packet pick-up so I could fly in Friday evening. There was good pre race communication with updated website and emails. I flew into Buffalo Friday night. As my flight got in fairly late and the race started on the later side at 9:15, I stayed at a hotel near the Buffalo airport. It is between 30-45 minutes from Buffalo to Lewiston depending on traffic and where you are staying. The race starts at Art Park which is my favorite concert venue in Western, NY and I am very familiar with as I saw many concerts there when I used to live in Rochester so it was very easy to navigate and park there. Even if you were not familiar with the area there was a lot of signage. For the half you park at the start and then there is a shuttle at the finish line back. There is race day packet pickup which I always appreciated especially for Saturday races. It was easy and included bib and the shirt which is a nice blue color with the race logo. There were some other coupons and little things. One thing I liked is the bib had a course map on the back. While the race was very well marked and easy to follow so it was absolutely not needed, it did bring peace of mind to have the map as I always get worried about getting lost during a race. There were a good amount of porta potties. The lines got long close to the start but when doesn’t that happen. The race had pacers but the slowest was either 2:30 or 2:45. My goal was under 3 hours but as I had another half the next day I didn’t want to push myself much faster than under 3 hours so stood kind of near the back. There are around 1000 participants so it’s a nice sized race. The race’s stated time limit was that you needed to maintain a 15 minute/mile pace so approximately 3:15 time limit. The race start at 9:15. I did think this was a bit late as it was a hotter day than expected for October but it is convenient as it allows people from Buffalo or even Rochester to not have to get up too early to get to the race. The course is quite nice. It is point to point. The race starts in downtown Lewiston and then most of the first half follow the Niagara River and is mostly shaded. It is a slight downhill the first half so it is quite fast. The river is very pretty and you also go by some nice houses. You do not see the falls on the course which is totally fine as it is not advertised that you do but don’t sign up for the race expecting to run by the falls. It is very easy to visit them during the trip though. For a quiet area there were a lot of spectators in this section. Around mile 8 you enter Fort Niagara Park which is also really cool and there are some great views of Lake Ontario. The race does flatten out here and is no longer downhill but is pretty much flat the whole way. Mile 10-13 is the worst section. It is more boring and unshaded along a large road and it got hot but I chugged along and kept a solid pace. The race is not completely closed to traffic but it is well managed so traffic doesn’t interfere much and there is a good size area to run in. The race was well produced with mile markers, plenty of aid stations with water and gatorade and good course markings. The aid stations got more plentiful as the race got hotter. I was very happy to be a few minutes under 3 hours especially as it got hot. If there was cool weather this would be a very fast course. The finish area was nice and the medal is huge and amazing. I loved getting a huge medal after not getting one the week before. From a back of the pack perspective I had zero issues and there were lots of other participants at my pace. The race also did not seem strict with the time limit (though never bank on that when choosing races). The race finishes in a park and there is a nice after party with veggie burgers for an option (always a plus to have a vegetarian option). The only production complaint I have is it took a long time to get the shuttle back but I did eventually get back to the start. Overall this was a very nice race. It was well-produced, scenic, flat and had a great medal. In terms of comparing it to other NY state races, I wouldn’t put it at the absolute top but it is in the top quarter. If you are looking for a race near Buffalo/Niagara Falls and prefer quieter, more rural races as opposed to big city races I would definitely recommend this one. It is also the day before Wineglass so could be a nice pair of races if you like to do doubles. I also found a race nearby in Ontario the next day if you are simultaneously working on the states and provinces.
Mighty good race!

Flew into BUF for the first time, and it’s an easy airport to travel. Rental car place attached to terminal. Rented a Buick for the first time ever. Drive to Sheraton Hotel in downtown NF was 35 minutes, no traffic at 6pm on a Wednesday. Toured NF on both the Canadian and US side before race. Picked up packet from Crunch Fitness about 15 minutes from downtown. East peasy; swag was a decent red shirt and bib. Damn Buick broke down in the middle of the street at an intersection in downtown Lewiston. Borrowed race cones to direct traffic until tow truck arrived. Rental company assigned us an Uber that reeked of cigarettes to take us all the way back to BUF to get a new rental. Finally made it back to hotel to carbo load for the night. Rode 7:30 complimentary race shuttle to start. A bit early but used it for the bathroom and stretching. Race began on time at 9:15 am and most of the course was downhill with great views of the Niagara River. Last couple of miles were mostly a slight uphill with no shade. Finish line had bagels, water, coffee, fruit, hotdogs, and veggie burgers, beer, and live music. Also about seven booths of local businesses. Grabbed food and enjoyed some live music before heading back to hotel to shower and pack up. Drive to BUF was easy as we came, and so was rental drop off and bag checking and security. On the flight now to connect in ATL. I would definitely recommend this race because the race staff is very helpful, friendly, and responsive to questions. I had to defer this race from previous year due to weather travel delay at JFK. Allison of the race staff graciously took care of me to ensure I made it to this year’s race, along with assisting with other issues that arose since last year. On top of that, the course had magnificent views and motivating crowd support throughout. Water/electrolyte stations were staffed and stocked, and there was even a special stop around mile 8 that offered their famous beer, bagels, and donuts! I highly suggest you sign up for this race if you need to knock out NY, or just want to visit the beautiful Niagara Falls. I’m so glad I chose this race to finish my 50 States goal!

Mighty Niagara was my first half marathon and things could not have been more perfect – a great race for a novice half marathoner. There were multiple options for early packet pickup. I had signed up too late to officially get a shirt, but to my pleasant surprise, they had boxes full of extra shirts from previous years – I got to trade up my drawstring bag for a purple heathered tech shirt with the “Are You Mighty?” motto on the back (love it!). There was plenty of parking at the start (Art Park in Lewiston) and a lot of space to stretch out and prepare. The course was generally flat with some minor inclines more towards the end. I loved the variety of scenery as it always makes the miles elapse effortlessly. You get to run on route 18F along the river as well as through a couple small towns (Lewiston and Youngstown), through Old Fort Niagara park, and more rustic fields towards the end. Trees were mostly still green, but there was a delightful smattering of yellows and oranges along the route. Lots of crowd support up until mile 8-9, then things get quiet. Among the attractions, I recall an “unofficial bacon and beer stop” in Youngstown, brass bands, dancers, etc. There was a great energy even on the more sparsely populated sections of the course. The finish takes you to a gorgeous park on Lake Ontario. I could not believe I attained my sub 2-hour goal on my first try! The post-race party ticked all the boxes. Great music, the best variety of food I’ve ever seen (bagels, hot dogs, burgers, chocolate milk, fruit, yogurt…), and craft beer from a local brewery. Taking the shuttle back to the start was a breeze. Not only would I recommend this race to others, but even as a notorious novelty-seeker, I would participate again!

Along the water, the weather is always kind of iffy. I had heard from other runners that in 2014 it was brutally hot. This year, though thunderstorms were on the forecast, the rain was limited to a light and refreshing mist and we ran comfortably under a cloudy sky. You along the water the whole time, though you cannot always see it. Around mile 10 I believe you get to run right along the lake, which is beautiful. On a clear day you can see across the lake to Toronto. The post-race celebration was great–food trucks, lots and lots of free food for runners, and you get to hang out on the water. Awesome medal too! Great race. I would recommend this to a first-time half marathoner.
