Have you ever been on an airplane, looked out the window and said, “How cool would it be to run on the runway?” The MIA RUNWAY 5K SERIES lets you do just that, run the runway of three major airports in Miami-Dade County. The series kicks off in March at Miami Executive Airport (TMB), followed by Miami-Opa locka Executive Airport (OPF) in April. The final destination in the series is MIA, where you will have the unique opportunity to run on the 8,600-foot-long runway 8L-26R.
MIA | MIAMI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
The final runway of the MIA Runway 5K Series is at MIA. Participants will experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to run on runway 8L-26R at MIA. The event will begin inside the 25,000-sq.-ft. American Airlines Maintenance hangar right on the edge of the runway.
MIA is America’s busiest airport for international passengers and freight, and the leading economic engine for Miami-Dade County and the state of Florida, generating business revenue of $31.9 billion annually.

Running next to an active (and busy) runway was quite the thrill! I was hoping to see a plane or two, but during the race, I must have seen at least 7 or 8 take off or land. And it only got busier after I finished. Obviously, there is no shade on a runway, but the race started just before sunrise, and if you were able to finish quickly enough, the sun wasn’t much of a factor. Otherwise, it got a little warm which is why I gave the course difficulty a 2. Didn’t use the water stations, but there was one of them that served two different points in the race.
The medal was very nice, and so was the technical t-shirt. Unfortunately, the t-shirt ran large and doesn’t fit me, which is a bummer.
Organization was good. There was an American Airline 787 (big plane) right there in the main gathering area. It was great for pictures.
I highly recommend this race. The experience is like no other race.
