I decided to do a destination marathon because I wanted guaranteed cooler weather than my home in South Florida. I had run (and bonked in) two marathons (my only two in total) in Florida, with both start temps at 70 degrees and 95+% humidity. I was looking for a change. The race conditions, 48 degrees at the start, were beautiful.

I’ve heard good things about Victoria. I’m familiar with Canada, from the east coast to the Rockies, but I’ve never made it out to the west coast. The scenery did not disappoint. The course was beautiful. The start and finish at the Legislative Assembly building was epic. What a backdrop! And the course – winding through beautiful neighborhoods, parks, and along the coast – was beautiful.

The people in Victoria, Vancouver, and the rest of the region we visited were amazing, and that includes the crowd support. I’ve run the Miami Marathon, and the crowd support in Victoria blew me away. It was so much better and consistent throughout the course than anything I had experienced in any distance. The people? Beautiful.

There are plenty of places to stay close to the start and the package pick-up was close by as well. All walkable from many hotels. Swag was good, but I wish there were more options for purchase. Got a real nice Under Armour jacket with the race clearly marked.

There are hills. Lots of hills. But maybe one or two with any real incline. The rest are rolling. I trained in pancake flat South Florida, but I ran a lot of bridges and treadmill incline workouts, and in all honesty, the hills didn’t impact my performance at all, as I achieved a 14 minute PR of 3:35:59.

I highly recommend this race for many reasons, and even though it’s pretty far from where I live, I hope to do it again someday soon.

Running next to an active (and busy) runway was quite the thrill! I was hoping to see a plane or two, but during the race, I must have seen at least 7 or 8 take off or land. And it only got busier after I finished. Obviously, there is no shade on a runway, but the race started just before sunrise, and if you were able to finish quickly enough, the sun wasn’t much of a factor. Otherwise, it got a little warm which is why I gave the course difficulty a 2. Didn’t use the water stations, but there was one of them that served two different points in the race.

The medal was very nice, and so was the technical t-shirt. Unfortunately, the t-shirt ran large and doesn’t fit me, which is a bummer.

Organization was good. There was an American Airline 787 (big plane) right there in the main gathering area. It was great for pictures.

I highly recommend this race. The experience is like no other race.

Great start.vl Very well organized. Each corral had their own starting air horn, lights and flares when it was their time to start. The course? Simply beautiful. For a big city marathon, you can’t ask for better views and scenery. Water stations were fully stocked and staffed. Felt at ease seeing how many aid stations and Porta potties there were. Great entertainment and great crowds cheering you on for almost the entire length of the course. Between that and the scenery, it was hard to be bored, even running for nearly 4 hours. The finisher metal is gorgeous and the after party at Bayfront Park was awesome. The only downside is the temp/humidity. Although the course is mostly flat (although there were a few more hills than I remember in Miami, and I’m from there), running a PB will likely be tough in what appears to be the norm temp wise for this race (was like 70 with 91% humidity to start and got up to 76 by the time I finished). This was my first marathon, and it definitely won’t be my last one, or my last one in Miami.
