Martin City Wine 5k, Oktoberfest 5k, Spirits 5k…call it what you will, but if you have done a 5k in Martin City, you have done this course. I did it for the first time last year under the Oktoberfest 5k, and I fell in love. Technically, I am a first-time runner for this race, but repeat runner on the course.
The 5k route starts on a smooth downhill with a short turn left to run through the quiet neighborhood. It is a solid route with straight lines and only a few turns. As with any race in Missouri, there are some hills, but nothing to scare off the experienced runner or fun runner. Mile 2 includes a slightly challenging V-neck elevation. Take advantage of the downhill and gain speed for the uphill. Once you reach the top, it’ll be a short parking lot turnaround before you repeat the V-neck elevation. After the uphill, the right turn finish line is not far away. The route is quick and easy enough to gain speed, even with the minor hills.
I ran this race coming off a two week vacation, with little running and unbalanced meals. I was worried that the ‘simple’ 5k would beat me. It did not. I avoided the beauty of the clouds and kept a steady pace. As much as I missed the Oktoberfest festivities, which included local music, chocolates, and an assortment of finish line goodies, the crowd at Rosehill Winery was one of a kind. I look forward to going back for live music in the evening while sipping wine on the patio.
I loved the wine theme medal. It’s heavy, has a great design and is worth of more than a 5k. I opted out of the long-sleeved tshirt, but regretted the decision. The burgundy color and matching medal design would have been the perfect swag package.
Great race rebranded into a better one

Okay so this is basically the Oktoberfest 5k (https://raceraves.com/races/oktoberfest-5k-mo/) without the polka. The winery across the street has partnered up to change the theme. This is NOT a vineyard run, and there’s no free wine at the end, but what you do get is a fast course despite 4 hills. As a closed loop, what goes up must come down, and PRing on this course is not impossible at all.
The course starts off in “downtown” Martin City across from the new winery (more on that later). A couple blocks up you make a left and head into the residential blocks. There’s a long hill that isn’t too steep, but it goes on long enough to zap your pace a little. Zig zag to the top and there’s a brief light downhill to the intersection where you’ll turn right and climb hill number 2, before making your first left and heading down a steep hill on the out-and-back portion of the reverse lollipop course. Unfortunately (or fortunately), that’s a bowl, so you’ll be climbing up a steep hill 3 on the other side before taking a gradual right turn to the turn around point. Then it’s back through the bowl again (hill 4), a right turn, and all downhill from here to the finish line. Actually the last 50 meters or so is flat, but you’ll still have inertia coming off that hill.
A couple dozen of us went to the winery afterwards and we were not disappointed. To be fair, a couple of us went before the race too, so maybe that’s why I PR’ed. The drinks are very reasonable and there’s a good selection. Wine is my guilty pleasure, so this isn’t overpriced Barefoot. It’s absolutely worth a stop for the 4 outdoor areas and a couple of inside rooms, all with very different vibes to them. Hoping this partnership can continue, because it was a great place to meet friends or make new ones after the race. The medal was a nicely designed cutout medal that easily could have been mistaken for a higher end 10k medal. The shirt was a nice midweight long sleeve that’s going to be a great car shirt for the upcoming cooler races.
