Yes, this will be an 100% biased review, because I LOVE the Martin City course. We hardly ever get to run it, so it’s a wonderful treat to run the course and push yourself for a good time….or just have a good time.
This time around, I opted for a good time with a friend.
The course is the same – start at the old KC Running Company store, turn left into the neighborhood, turn right onto 135th, turn left for a v-deep hill toward a parking lot turnaround, get up the hill and smooth into a downhill finish. The next race in Martin City is in May, and I would like to push myself for a good race time.
Now, that makes this a fun races is all the extras. If you are a whiskey drinker this race lives up to its name. Runners can partake in a whiskey tasting pre- and post- race. The local winery offered runners three options, while a coffee truck was on hand for an additional purchase. Runners also got a huge breakfast burrito from the local restaurant. The best part? Everyone was truly friendly and out for a fun time. The local winery even opened up early for runners and offered a discount on mimosas. A crew of us stayed for a few hours. Whether it was chillin’ with old friends or meeting some new ones, Martin City is just plain ol’ good fun. The local vendors welcome runners and appreciate when we come into town. So, if you decide to join the next Martin City race (May 30th), don’t be a stranger when you see a group of us at the Rosehill winery. I have no doubt that you’ll be welcomed into the crew like an old friend.
Resurrected and rebranded, stronger yet

This is the standard Martin City course. Oktoberfest, Spirits Run, Whiskey Run, Wine Run. It’s always been nice, but it seems to be getting consistently better, if such a thing is possible. The beginning and end allowed us to sample a whiskey, bourbon and rye from a local distiller, and the end of the race also had massive breakfast burritos that were far and away a higher caliber than you usually get. I bet mine weighed 10oz.
The course I’ve spoken about at length in the reviews of the other races, but the short and fast of it is a quick circle in the neighborhood than a right turn, up a small hill, left turn and a long out and back with a big bowl in the middle. This is not a flat course, but what goes up must come down and the last stretch of fast downhill into the finish line will get you going. The DJ was great and the food/beverages were far better than some random little 5k would incline you to expect. The winery across the street that was the sponsor for the Wine Run opened early again, and the after party moved over there. It’s a great location for hanging out with friends (new and old) afterwards by the multiple firepits and indoor and outdoor seating areas, to include a beautiful courtyard and multiple indoor and covered outdoor areas. The drink selection is extensive without pretension, and quite a few runners were still there hours later. This is a celebration race. I met people on their first ever 5k, one person who’d done her first 5k the day prior, and one who’d knocked off 20 minutes from her time last year. All phenomenal reasons to celebrate. Sometimes you celebrate your friends who motivate you despite being exhausted from the day before. Sometimes you celebrate all the miles you’ve been fortunate enough to run when so few you’ve ran alone. Thanks, ccruiz03. Find a reason to celebrate, or borrow one from a new friend, this race has great energy that makes it hard not to.
