2nd time running the Helvetia Half – I think this is one of the best HM’s in the PDX area today. Production and swag are top notch as well and so is the parking. The course has the right mix of challenging terrain and open road to let loose. I will be back for more for sure!

This was my first time running this race and I wasn’t disappointed. It was well put together. The volunteers were great. The course was challenging with all the hills but fun. I wasn’t running this one for time so I enjoyed it even though it rained. Loved the scenery passing by farmlands and the Helvetia Tavern. The post burger was delicious too!

The Helvetia 10K was extremely organized and a lot of fun to do! The course was clearly marked and most of it was flat which is what I needed to continue my training towards a half marathon. It is AMAZING to see yourself on the big display board as you walk into the field for the finish line. Makes you feel like a star!

This is my 8th time running this half marathon. I love it. It’s not to hilly but hilly enough for a little challenge. It is well organized and has so many water stops nobody will go thirsty. Where else can you go for a run in the country and have a big fat juicy Helvetia burger at the end. Hard work paid off.

Running on the streets of Hillsboro Oregon out in the fields is a cathartic experience. While there are some hills, the overall difficulty of the course is minimized by the last half being mostly downhill or flat. Thoroughly enjoyed it and will run it next year.

I’m sure if I was a runner I would have had a much different experience. As a walker, I was disappointed. I’m a fairly fast walker, so I wasn’t last. But around 10 miles, water stations were being taken down. When I finished, there was no fanfare. No music. It was like the event was over and there were still about 100 people out. The awards ceremony started (and ended) before walkers could even finish the course. It was a huge personal accomplishment for me, but there was no celebration.

Walkers should be allowed to start first so that they can finish with everyone else or festivities should last up until most walkers are finished.

The company that manages the Hood to Coast relay also host the Helvetia Half, so the event is well organized, as you’d expect. The course is on paved roads, winding through the farm country in Hillsboro, Oregon. Lots of great scenery to distract you when it gets a bit hilly, particularly around miles 5-8. They have plenty of water stations and the course is well-marked, and in areas where you share the road with cars, the local police do a nice job of escorting local traffic at a slow speed.

After the race you can enjoy live music; the band covered a Dwight Yoakam song, so I was happy. You also get a tasty burger (or veggie burger, if you prefer) and they have post-race chocolate milk, which I love. A big plus about the pre- and post-race area are the permanent bathroom facilities that are open to runners (the start and finish area are in a football/baseball stadium complex). Bag check was well-staffed and organized, and there were plenty of vendors and booths for racers and their families to peruse before and after the event.

You get a shirt and a medal as a reward for entering and completing this race, and they are both very nice. Overall, I highly recommend this race.
