To start, parking is awful and no one was of any help to get me where I needed to be – both for parking and to get to the start line. The police officer that was blocking traffic for the race told me to park a mile and a half away from the start line, but told me that it was only about a half a mile away. So I RAN a mile and a half to the start line that was not really marked off that great. There was also no PA or announcer saying anything about start times or anything like that. So there were no directions, no clear start or finish markers, plus the 5k was still going on and people were finishing that. Next thing I know, a cannon goes off and that was the start of the 10 miler. So I missed that. And then people gave me attitude while I was running and asking if I was headed in the right direction for the 10 miler. I will not do this race again, and certainly wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. I’ve done the Broad Street run in Philly and that is a MUCH MUCH better race!! Even my neighborhood 5k had a speaker and a microphone for the starter!! It’s crazy! Proceeds went to Franklin High School. I work for one of Franklin’s elementary schools, so I know for a fact that they could have acquired some sort of equipment to make the start a bit more organized and clear for everyone.

After running some of the bigger races in NYC, I was happy to find a nice local race that was simple. You roll up, park and run. If you are looking for tons of fanfare and a large to-do, this may not be the race for you. I really enjoyed the challenge aspect of training for a half marathon that was split between a 5k and a 10 miler. Adding the extra medal for doing both is a great motivator. Easy packet pickup, and just a great course. Not much going on as far as fans, but the course is well-marked and closed off and its never very crowded with other runner.
Each year they do a different New Jersey theme and its really clever. I intend to run this race every year I’m healthy.
