The Women’s Distance Festival celebrates the history of women’s rights to participate in running events at any distance and at any age. While women’s participation in distance running nearly matches that of men, the Women’s Distance Festival continues to serve as a celebration of the determination and dedication of women runners across the country.
The Frederick Women’s Distance Festival is organized by the Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club as part of the RRCA Women’s Distance Festival Series. All net proceeds benefit the Women’s Giving Circle of Frederick County.
The main event is a 5k Run/Walk where women runners and walkers of all ages and abilities enjoy the well-supported course on the campus of Frederick Community College and in the adjacent neighborhood. This women-only event is timed with overall and age group awards, but don’t worry if you’re not out there to burn up the course. All paces are welcome and we celebrate every finisher. The 5k is capped at 700 participants in 2020. A short-sleeved Tech shirt is included in the registration fee.
The Little Women 1k Fun Run is a short, non-competitive event for our younger runners. Parents are welcome to accompany the little girls (no registration required for adult companions) and strollers are allowed. Very cute cotton t-shirt and finishers’ medal included in the registration fee.
Enjoy the expanded expo and post-race celebration. This year, the race-day expo will again showcase many of the local nonprofit organizations that serve and empower women in our community. Take a few minutes after the race to visit with these amazing organizations and learn how they benefit and impact local women in need. Sponsors and vendors will round out the expo and there will be some opportunities for a bit of shopping! Don’t forget to tuck a few dollars or a credit card in your pocket.

This all-women’s 5K is, without a doubt, one of my favorite 5Ks of all time. The organization of this race is flawless, and the extra special touches from the RD make this race definitely worth more than the entry fee.
Things I love:
– The race t-shirt is always pretty, colorful, comfortable, and fits so well (yay, women’s cut!). I wear these shirts on training runs and just to hang out year-round.
– The awards are beautiful and unique, and almost always are handmade by the race director. And there are often delicious and beautiful cookies involved, too. YUM!
– Tons of great food at the finish.
– Usually pretty good race photos.
– Door prizes!
– Always awesome and encouraging volunteers.
Things I don’t love:
– The course is just okay. It’s not very hard, and there’s nothing in particular I don’t like about it, but for some reason I just don’t love it. But the other awesome aspects of the race make it totally worthwhile anyway.
– It’s run in August, so it’s always hot and I never PR. Which isn’t the race’s fault, but it’s still something I don’t love. 😉
