This all-women’s 5K is, without a doubt, one of my favorite 5Ks of all time. The organization of this race is flawless, and the extra special touches from the RD make this race definitely worth more than the entry fee.
Things I love:
– The race t-shirt is always pretty, colorful, comfortable, and fits so well (yay, women’s cut!). I wear these shirts on training runs and just to hang out year-round.
– The awards are beautiful and unique, and almost always are handmade by the race director. And there are often delicious and beautiful cookies involved, too. YUM!
– Tons of great food at the finish.
– Usually pretty good race photos.
– Door prizes!
– Always awesome and encouraging volunteers.
Things I don’t love:
– The course is just okay. It’s not very hard, and there’s nothing in particular I don’t like about it, but for some reason I just don’t love it. But the other awesome aspects of the race make it totally worthwhile anyway.
– It’s run in August, so it’s always hot and I never PR. Which isn’t the race’s fault, but it’s still something I don’t love. 😉

The Market Street Mile is a delightful little race that’s been a Frederick staple for many years now. It’s a point-to-point run on Frederick’s most prominent downtown street, Market Street, that kicks off Frederick’s annual “In the Streets” festival. The course itself is beautiful and highlights the loveliest parts of Frederick’s downtown area, and because of all the prep going on for In the Streets, there is excellent crowd support. It’s also great place to PR because the last 3/4 of the race is slightly downhill.
Other positive things:
– Plenty of parking.
– Nice awards and post-race snacks.
– Very well-organized.
– There are many different heats for like runners to run together: women’s, men’s, kid’s, master’s, and an untimed family fun run.
Two other things to note:
– I don’t think race registration includes a shirt – you have to purchase separately.
– If you don’t register early, the price of the race goes up pretty high.
