Offering 5 and 10 mile course options that include outstanding lake views, mellow single-track, and scenic open field running, the Common Rush Trail Run at Harris Lake is a super-fun, mid-summer trail run at one of the most beautiful parks in the Triangle.
Providing easy passing, this one-loop 5.5 mile and two-loop 10.0 mile course begins with .5 miles of wide dirt road running. After this beginning section, athletes run along a combination of open meadows, wide dirt road double-track, and forested single-track, much of it with gorgeous lake views. While this course is comprised primarily of single-track trails, it is not overly tight, so there are plenty of passing opportunities spread throughout. There is minimal root and rock filled sections and only 211′ and 397′ of elevation gain for the 5 mile and 10 mile courses, respectively.
Harris Lake is owned and operated by Wake County, NC and located in the southwest corner of the county. This beautiful 680-acre park forms a peninsula on Harris Lake in New Hill, NC and boasts gorgeous lake views, ponds, open fields, playgrounds, a disc golf course, and close to 20 miles of forested hiking and mountain biking trails.

Since I reviewed this race last year, I’ll just add some more details.
Course: while most of the course is a generally soft trail, the beginning (and on the 2nd lap of the 10-mile course) has crushed stone that can be uncomfortable with softer soled shoes. My altra superior come with an optional stone guard and I wish I had used them.
After the race: there were games and prizes after the awards were given out. The prizes were just little stuff, but I thought it a nice touch. There was also a variety of food available including nonalcoholic beer.

This event offered a 5 (actually 5.5) mile and a 10 mile run. Both started at the same time, with the 10 mile route being two loops of the 5 miler. The course was mainly double and single track trails with occasional views of the lake. The trails were not overly technical, but there were plenty of roots/stumps to watch out for. The race didn’t start until 8 AM, so it was quite hot by the time I finished the 10 mile race. Runners got a nice short sleeved shirt. Pint glasses were given as age group awards.
