I am definitely a repeat runner. (I even did it when it was cancelled due to the air quality from a N California fire!). The communication is timely, accurate and repeated so you don’t miss a thing. The Expo is full of vendors with useful products, including the Happy Hour and the bananas for everyone! My daughter lives in Monterey so I don’t have worries about parking for the race or the expo, but nor should others as there are plenty of options. As others have said, the atmosphere all around town for the week prior to the race is festive and motivating, including the shake out runs and additional races (for the “challenge” medal). Having a gear check bin right at your corral makes it so you can keep warm right up until race time. There are plenty of porta pottys (but could have had volunteers pointing out a whole row of empty ones). The race itself was everything the other reviewers have said. Most of the run is along the beautiful coastline, but we are treated to a run up a little hill to Pacific Grove and the cheering, energetic townspeople. After the run, the food is just right: something sweet, something salty, something fruity, something protein, and my favorite–chocolate milk. One of the downsides is immediately after the run, for those of us finishing somewhere in the middle of the pack, it is very jammed up and you are not really able to walk out the kinks of the run. It takes several long minutes to get to the courtyard hosting the after party (where you have one more opportunity to purchase swag or have a cold one.) The medals are designed locally, very unique, and represent a different aspect of the Monterey Peninsula every year. Ultimately, the best part of the race is in the beauty of the land and sea–from the sounds of the sea lions barking, to the sight of the waves crashing, to the smell of the crusty seaweed-it is truly a gift to be able to run this race year after year.

As others have said, there are no views of Mt. Rainier, but there were streams and sunlight streaming through the trees and a beautiful green forest to admire. Also, I could have worn regular running shoes, as the “trail” was mostly pavement and some nicely worn trail with a few rocks thrown in. There was a fair amount of running on the main road, but it had cones and very few cars passed us. As a trail run, it was not difficult, just a few ups and downs and a longer hill towards the middle of the race. Then pretty much easy going after that The parking was atrocious–getting in took almost 15 minutes and getting out was a cluster. There were people stopping traffic to let us in and out, but it was just too crowded. There were not enough porta pottys at the start (though there were a few up the hill a little bit). The start was super crowded and almost on top of the porta pottys, but it did start on time– and it is chip time–so no worries, just crowded. The packet pick-up venue only had few booths, but it did have lovely swag to purchase. Everyone was quite friendly and helpful. The setting was green and pretty and festive. The hikes in and around the park are definitely amazing and made for a great long weekend. I would do it again if there weren’t so many other National Parks I want to visit!

Packet pick up is in the cutest little “wine” town. Prepare to go for your bib and possibly happy hour with wine and cheese. The race venue is a bit small, but there is ample parking and facilities right on the spot. The course winds up and down and around vineyards on a gravel road. The vines were ripe (and I surreptitiously tasted a grape or two) and colorful and beautiful with fall colors. There are ponds and little lakes and even harvesting vehicles and tools along the way! The finish has an amazing breakfast and festive event. Wine glasses and wine prizes make it even more fun. The management and volunteers were fabulous and did everything to ensure a memorable time for the runners and families. The first time I ran it, the weather was perfect–cool enough to run but warm at the end for the party. Last year it rained cats and dogs and the course had some mud puddles by the end, but the volunteers worked extra hard trying to keep the pancakes and eggs dry for even the last finishers. Gotta run it if you like the wine country. Far better running in the vineyard than on the road, looking at the vines from a distance.
