Welcome to the Christchurch Marathon – the South Island’s favourite foot race. Inspired by the 1974 Commonwealth Games marathon, the Christchurch Marathon event is renowned as one of the fastest courses in the world. It was a rough day – super cold with an added wind chill and torrential rain so I think my review may be harsh. I am doing it again this year and hope for a cold dry day. I felt so low at the end as there was nobody there to cheer me in. I think Christchurch is big enough to avoid full marathon runners having to repeat part of the course as this is not fun at all. All New Zealand marathons are very expensive and very tight when it comes to medal quality and ‘goodie’ bags. I hope to be more impressed this year. The course is definitely a fast one if there’s no wind or torrential rain – completely flat.
