This memorial race for Cpt. James R. Minicozzi is held over Labor Day during La Festa Italiana. The 5k Race and 1 Mile Walk benefit The Boys and Girls Club of NEPA’s Christmas Party and College Scholarships.
The proceeds we raise host over 200 children at The Boys & Girls Clubs of NEPA for their annual Christmas party. The club is the safe haven for keeping these children off of the streets, it is their home away from home. Every child is provided with a hot meal, hours of festivities and winter hats, gloves & warm, embroidered with the Boys & Girls Club logo on it, coat, vest, hooded sweatshirt or item of warmth for their upper body along with other surprises. All of this is possible from this memorial race, thru the UNICO Scranton Chapter, as well as awarding 2 college scholarships at West Scranton High School, to a male & a female student, in their current graduating class.

The course is probably the simplest I have run for a race: down one street, turn right and go one block over, return on a parallel street. There were a couple of hilly spots where I walked for a few seconds. I managed to snag one of the age group awards and…WOW! I received a large tote bag, $50 restaurant gift certificate, $25 gift certificate at another restaurant, certificate for an ice cream pie from a local dairy, and a certificate for 2 lbs of cookies from a local pastry shop. I would have considered these great prizes for overall winners, let alone age group winners. The overall winners prizes were even better and valued at least $1500, and more!
