This race screams 4th of July. The race is and out and back and be prepared for hills. Nothing steep, but some of them do persist for a while. The breakfast burritos were cooking after I ran the pre-miles and my mouth was salivating through most of the race. Like all Bodies races, the music kept things pumped and runners of all speeds are there. There were a couple hundred people, which was more than I was expecting, and I hope this race sticks around, not just because of the new course adding options to the area. There are a number or races on the same day for people to choose from here, and while the other races have more familiarity and word-of-mouth, this is the sleeper hit that makes you not want to leave afterwards. Very much looking forward to next year, when perhaps the prior day’s 18 miles isn’t wearing me down.

With four local July 4th races, it was hard to narrow down with one to do. We picked the right one. The inaugural 5k benefiting the local high school’s cross country team included tshirt, medal, timing, watermelon, breakfast burritos and awesome support. Essentially, it was an invitation to the community cookout. It was the perfect way to start a day of July 4th celebrations.
Packet-pickup was seamless, as any race produced by Bodies Race Company. The music was pumping, all the volunteers arrived early and ready to work. Although it was 5k, the sole aid stations included ICE COLD water and purple Gatorade. There were probably 6-7 volunteers cheering people on and handing out water.
The course itself was relatively easy. We started uphill through the high school’s parking lot, before turning right twice to the main road for some rolling hills. The course itself was not a huge push, but the humdity and heat made it a good challenge. I never expect to PR in the summer and I was no where near to doing so, but I was able to push through and that always makes a good race even better.
The swag was a light beige, thin weight cotton shirt with a matching heavyweight medal and correlating ribbon. There was a bit of a line to get the medal, but they were also handing out race times. The cold watermelon slices definitely hit the spot. Before the race, jkelling and I had first row seats to the freshly made breakfast burritos. The smell of bacon first thing in the morning encouraged us to ‘run fast’, as recommended by Dawn, an awesome volunteer to saved us two burritos.
I am definitely looking forward to doing this race again. I would not have thought it was an inaugural race. It was definitely a first class time.
