Race through history on the beautiful and challenging trails of Amat Kwanyil in San Diego. An ancient extinct volcano, Black Mountain has been Kumeyaay land for thousands of years, long before miners came and established the now abandoned arsenic mine. The open space is also home to chaparral and coastal sage scrub, with manzanita-lined single-track, laurel sumac, deer, bobcats, red diamond rattlesnakes, and the occasional mountain lion.
The three race distances, 50K, 25K, and half marathon, provide opportunities for all levels of experience, from first-time trail runners to ultra veterans. But don’t be misled: trails can be rocky, steep, and technical. This course offers an opportunity for different runner’s strengths to shine. With about 5,500 feet of elevation gain in the 50K, 2,500 in the 25K, and 2,000 in the half, and a balance of technical single-track and jeep trail, runners who excel at uphills, flats, downhills, technical trails, or heat will find moments of joy.

Black Mountain is a very challenging area to run, and this race does a great job providing a full tour of the area. Historically, this tends to take place on a hot weekend, so it would make a huge difference to make it earlier in the month. Also, the lack of mile markers/confusing markers can be really challenging mentally when you’re already slogging through a race. The course support is great, though! Would have loved better swag for the price
