I ran the 30k for this race and had a really great experience. Parking was clear, the course was mapped out clearly, the aid stations had great volunteers, and the scenery was beautiful. The race ended with a nice little uphill challenge which was the most difficult part of the course! I really enjoyed my experience and the shirt/medal/snacks after were top notch!

Recap: 2022 Birch Bay Road Race 15k

I love this race! Honestly, I kinda want to leave it at that, but then I wouldn’t get to brag on the amazing crew of Orca Running staff and volunteers that made this race so wonderful.

First, I love a race that has super easy parking! Sometimes it’s the little things.

    Moving on…

The start/finish area was super well organized. Pre-race I had plenty of time to greet friends, visit the porta potty, and get myself ready to run. Post-race I got my medal, shirt, and snacks with little to no waiting in line.

This course is so beautiful! There are amazing views of Birch Bay for most of the 15k, and when you do turn inland it’s into a very pleasant forested area. Running along the water brings with it some wind, but it’s well worth the views in my opinion.

All the folks at today’s race were so friendly and supportive! Runners, volunteers, and staff!!! I ran in my Where’s Waldo costume and so many people offered shout outs, support, and various other joyful reactions.

It was an absolutely gorgeous morning for a run!

I traveled from Las Vegas to participate in the 5k run. I visit the area often and it is a beautiful place to find some peace and quiet during the off season. I met a wonderful gal from Bellingham whom I hope to join in other area runs in the future. The weather was almost perfect just a bit breezy. The finisher’s medal was just stunning and won’t end up in a metal tin with the rest of my collection. It was not a rigidly structured race but offered everything needed including gear check and hot red pepper tomato soup at the finish. Thank you to the organizers, sponsors and volunteers who made this well worth the time and expense to make the trip north.

This race was not organized good, they sent me a email telling me the 5K race I raced in would start at 9:00 AM but then it started at 8:00 AM instead. My race card or whatever it’s called had a random persons name. They said I signed up late???? What does that mean? The race its self was good, fun and a good amount of exercise.

This race was great, and I absolutely loved how they mailed the bibs and told us to just show up 10 min before our start time – it really reduced my race anxiety and helped things go smoothly! The course was incredibly beautiful, super helpful volunteers, and plenty of aid stations. They made us feel special and valued at the end – the way you want to feel in every race! I loved how you pick up your swag at the end too, instead of at the beginning! A+ experience and I can’t wait to do another Orca Running race!

I have run a handful of Orca Running events and the team always pick the most beautiful places: Bainbridge, Lake Washington, Birch Bay, Snoqualmie valley, etc.

Not only were every single race organized, the staff always goes above and beyond to make sure the runner are having a great time.

Aid stations were fully stocked with drinks, gels and friendly volunteers, communications has been plentiful, and parking instructions are always great and clear.

The course itself wasn’t the most challenging compared to most races in Seattle with a million steep hills, overall the course was relatively flat until you hit around 12mile mark, then there was a lot of gradual uphill but it was not terrible.

As usual, Orca did an amazing job, even better when you factor in Covid!
That said, running events bring out the worst in our fellow humans. People who are cheery and wave on the streets on a casual training run would run over someone’s pet to get a PR. The organizers said “due to Covid, wear a buff or mask when passing, and announce your presence (on the left).”. I estimate 10% of runners actually followed the instructions…(I am slower and got passed by quite a few)…I’m not worried about the notice–but no mask? Hello people it’s a pandemic! I guess I’ll wait to participate until being around idiots isn’t dangerous. I have participated in many running events and it always amazes me: no dogs? someone will bring one. No strollers? ditto. No earbuds due to traffic? guaranteed.
It is no wonder we’ve had over 500K deaths in the US, people don’t care about each other? “i’d wear a mask when passing but it would take 30 seconds off my time!”
    Sheesh

I’ve now run all 3 distances at this race and all are great with the 15k and 30k being unique options. It is hard to beat the beauty of running along the bay.

Orca Running always puts on 1st class events and did a great job of following COVID guidelines and protocols. Their medals are always unique and I like that they give you a real quality tshirt vs just another running shirt.

This was my 6th Covid-approved race since the start of the pandemic. I have to say Orca Racing did the BEST job organizing and making this still feel like a real race. Because they asked for an estimated finish time and paired faster runners together, for the first time in a year (before Covid) I finally earned a new PR! I completely understand the need to social distance and staggered starts during this pandemic, however in other races I never had anyone to try to catch nor the need to keep up my pace to not let others catch me. Orca also had wonderfully cheerful volunteers throughout the race!!! In all my other races this year there were hardly any “cheerleaders” along the course, making it feel more like a personal/casual run than an actual race. Because of this beautiful day, great team, and excellent organization of an event, I took 2 minutes off my time for the 15km from last year. Thank you, Orca Racing! I’m going to sign up for more of your events this year. 🙂

It’s way up there. North that is, and out of the big cities. It can be quite cold and ferociously windy. You wanna make sure you book your accommodations. The Semiahmoo resort is wonderful, but you MUST be prepared to byob. Bring your own breakfast. Nothing is open in time before the race to allow it to digest.

Course scenery is 10/10. Running through the Birch Bay State Park with the water and the San Juans and Vancouver Island off in the distance is just absurdly beautiful.

Stick around for the bird watching (in my opinion) and make a nice long weekend out of it.

15k (and 30k) are nice distances that you probably don’t get to do every day. Course isn’t very hilly and probably will never be too toasty. Let it rip and get a PR!
