As usual, Orca did an amazing job, even better when you factor in Covid!
That said, running events bring out the worst in our fellow humans. People who are cheery and wave on the streets on a casual training run would run over someone’s pet to get a PR. The organizers said “due to Covid, wear a buff or mask when passing, and announce your presence (on the left).”. I estimate 10% of runners actually followed the instructions…(I am slower and got passed by quite a few)…I’m not worried about the notice–but no mask? Hello people it’s a pandemic! I guess I’ll wait to participate until being around idiots isn’t dangerous. I have participated in many running events and it always amazes me: no dogs? someone will bring one. No strollers? ditto. No earbuds due to traffic? guaranteed.
It is no wonder we’ve had over 500K deaths in the US, people don’t care about each other? “i’d wear a mask when passing but it would take 30 seconds off my time!”
    Sheesh

I’ve now run all 3 distances at this race and all are great with the 15k and 30k being unique options. It is hard to beat the beauty of running along the bay.

Orca Running always puts on 1st class events and did a great job of following COVID guidelines and protocols. Their medals are always unique and I like that they give you a real quality tshirt vs just another running shirt.

This was my 6th Covid-approved race since the start of the pandemic. I have to say Orca Racing did the BEST job organizing and making this still feel like a real race. Because they asked for an estimated finish time and paired faster runners together, for the first time in a year (before Covid) I finally earned a new PR! I completely understand the need to social distance and staggered starts during this pandemic, however in other races I never had anyone to try to catch nor the need to keep up my pace to not let others catch me. Orca also had wonderfully cheerful volunteers throughout the race!!! In all my other races this year there were hardly any “cheerleaders” along the course, making it feel more like a personal/casual run than an actual race. Because of this beautiful day, great team, and excellent organization of an event, I took 2 minutes off my time for the 15km from last year. Thank you, Orca Racing! I’m going to sign up for more of your events this year. 🙂

It’s way up there. North that is, and out of the big cities. It can be quite cold and ferociously windy. You wanna make sure you book your accommodations. The Semiahmoo resort is wonderful, but you MUST be prepared to byob. Bring your own breakfast. Nothing is open in time before the race to allow it to digest.

Course scenery is 10/10. Running through the Birch Bay State Park with the water and the San Juans and Vancouver Island off in the distance is just absurdly beautiful.

Stick around for the bird watching (in my opinion) and make a nice long weekend out of it.

15k (and 30k) are nice distances that you probably don’t get to do every day. Course isn’t very hilly and probably will never be too toasty. Let it rip and get a PR!

For this road race, participants run on the shoulder of roads along Birch Bay. There are gorgeous views of the water. Any water front coarse will be exposed to the wind, and we were definitely running in some wind on 4/10/2021. Orca Running have a great system for keeping everyone safe and in compliance with WA state COVID-19 protocol. It was a wonderful event and I had so much fun!

The Orca Running team put on a well organized event. They had protocols in place to keep everyone safe . It was great hearing Porter’s dad jokes in person! This has always been one of my favorite races. The wind kept the herons away this year, but the view from the course is breathtaking. Great volunteers cheering us on at the aid stations, sweet heron medal, and pop tarts at the finish! I couldn’t have asked for more, except missing our Canadian running friends this year.

Their events have it all! I am a fussy runner and have certain criteria I look for in selecting. (You as well right?) Orca Events put customers first! They prove this time and time again and I can’t stress this enough. If food is your thing, they had soup to warm you up, buns, fruit, chips and candy mmm. Weather was a little cold at the start but great once you got going. Hey…if you’re cold….run faster! Maybe swag motivates you? Well, their medals are kick ass and the shirts are super soft and comfy. If you sign up for 4 or more you get a wicked bonus medal. They have tons of events to chose from and many distances. (They also have a trail series) So value for money checkety check on my list! Aid stations are a plenty and gels at every one so they didn’t cheap out which was nice. I want scenery (another one of my criteria) they never fall short on this. Epic courses and views, in neat little towns. Free photos, free gear check, free race day package pick up, free last minute distance switch (and they did this with a smile) Another one of their races got cancelled due to weather. Many options were provided for us to make up for it and again so easy to deal with. They also have payment plans if you want to race but have a monthly budget. They have thought of it all, but of course…..they are runners!

This is my 2nd Orca race. Cool medals, though the medals were delayed for this race. I really like how the Orca races usually offer events with a short race and longer race so everyone can participate. Birch Bay was beautiful, the smell, the breeze was all great. I did the nice easy and flat 15k. Would definitely run this race again.

This race is in the beautiful coastal town of Birch Bay, which would be so lovely, but as the race is in early April, the race morning was pretty chilly. The rain held off, which was lucky, but I think I would have enjoyed it much more if it wasn’t so chilly. The course was beautiful along the coast of the bay and a little bit through Birch Bay State Park. It was essentially a flat out and back with a small hill to get you right up to the end, so just be ready for that after you’ve already put in nine miles! I didn’t spend much time in the morning at the pre-race festivities, choosing to stay in the warm car until it was time to race. Post-race was great. They provided soup and fruit and some sweets for race recovery, and people at the tents were very helpful and friendly. They also had a big bell for people to ring if they got a PR, which is super fun. Unfortunately this year they had some issues with the company who did their medals, so those are being shipped after, which is a bummer, but things happen. Overall, it was a good. Birch Bay was a lovely time, I would run this again. I just wish it was maybe later in April, so we could get some sunshine and warmth!

I loved this race! As always, Orca Running did an excellent job with the event. Well marked course, plentiful aid stations, and great volunteers. The course was beautiful with scenery varying from waterfront to woods to rural roads. The race was smaller and very relaxed, making it a pleasant and low stress experience. The biggest challenge was the wind, but what do you expect in a coastal area in the spring? Not a lot to do in the area, but worth staying overnight before/after just for the peace and quiet. 100% would recommend.
