The Badger Trail Races are two days of races along the Badger State Trail. I ran the 50 miler, which started on the second day. There were only about 20 people registered for the 50 miler. I suspect it is because there is a 12 hour cutoff, vs a 33 hour cutoff for the 100K and 12 hour cutoff for the 50K…
Normally the race would be pretty flat but it was diverted around the Stewart Tunnel due to construction. The added mileage was hilly and on the road. There is also a section of road at Monroe. Otherwise the race is on the flat and mostly shady/partly shady Badger State Trail, which is soft gravel. The 50 mile race is named the Stewart Tunnel 50 mile, which is pictured on the medal and the shirt. Which is kind of funny since we didn’t even see Stewart Tunnel. 🙂 Supposedly the tunnel will be ready for next year’s race.
Aid stations are about 4-7 miles apart and the volunteers are AWESOME. They were super enthusiastic and went out of their way to take care of us even though we were going by at the tail end of the race. The stations are well stocked with a variety of food and drinks. The race director gave us our medals at the finish line and talked to us. There was still plenty of activity at the finish area.
I would recommend this race for anyone that wants a flat ultra. This was my first ultra and I enjoyed the race. The time limit for the 100 mile is pretty generous at 36 hours. Also would be good for those that want to walk a half or full marathon, 11 hour cutoff. Swag was nice, got a bucket hat, socks, buff, and patch.
Nice Beginner Ultra

This is a small race, where everyone is welcome (no matter what distance you choose). It is very well organized by Ten Junk Miles (don’t forget to check out their podcast) and is very well supported! Packet pick-up was at the park, where there was also a local music fest and onsite free camping. There were a lot of goodies including hat, socks, shirt, etc. The course (besides the detour) was flat and the trails we very well groomed, there were many shaded areas depending on what time of day it was. Aid Stations were AMAZING! Stocked with many different items, including shots & beer 😊. The medal was nice, and the finisher pizza, pop and beer were delicious and plentiful. I really enjoyed this race & look forward to running it again – with all the encouragement and support, I think I am ready to increase my mileage from 50k to 100k.

This is a smaller race, and very well organized. Easy check in at the local park, fairly nice swag (cool trucker hat and T shirt), not really an expo. The race director runs the 10 junk miles podcast and was super friendly and supportive. The race is on a pancake flat rail trail that was mostly shaded. This year there was a detour that took you along very hilly, scenic, rural roads. I kind of liked the scenery, but definitely was not flat. lol The aid station was VERY well stocked with all the goodies you’d expect at a trail run (cookies, sandwiches, candy, chips, granola, pickles, etc etc). The volunteers were amazing and friendly. Nice medal. There was a food truck serving realllllly good pizza at the finish and all you could drink Spotted Cow beer. We really enjoyed the race and would recommend it to anyone looking for a lovely, flat trail run.
Flat, fast course out and back.
