Monies raised from this event are donated to the local youth of the Middle Keys, both at the local schools as well as other youth groups which promote athletically oriented activities. Since the inception of the run in 1982 Middle Keys’ have benefited from donations of well over $500,000 distributed by the Marathon Runners Club.
First place age group winners and overall winners have always been awarded the unique black coral 7 to wear proudly. We are very thankful to ALL of the sponsors, volunteers and participants, as well as the continued support from the City and County Commissioners, Florida Department of Transportation, Monroe County Fire and Rescue, City of Marathon Fire and Rescue, and our local Monroe County Sheriff’s Department.

Getting into the race is the hardest part. It sold out in minutes. I would have put the difficulty as a 1 but training in 25 degree weather in WI then running in 80 down in the Keys is what made it difficult. There is a hard pace cut off. If you can’t keep up with the required pace (about 80 minutes to finish) a bus will pick you up. This road is the only way in and out of the Keys and they keep it closed for runners so the HAVE to open it up when they promise. However, if you can run this, DO IT!!! The race is so unique and there is nothing that compares to running with open ocean on both sides of you. It is well worth the early morning start time and the heat. The shirt is an average tech shirt and the medal is good but nothing extra special. This one is all about the experience. This is a bucket list race.

Tough to get into this race but if you can, do it. Well worth the run across a beautiful bridge. It is your only opportunity all year to do this. Though the coordination with state and local authorities shutting down this life-line to Key West is very well orchestrated, after 38 years, you would think packet pickup would be well oiled as well. Please be patient! Most frustrating part of the weekend.

This a difficult race to get entry since it’s limited and local residents are allowed to enter a week earlier than non-residents. I was very lucky to get in on my first try. The bib pickup was smooth and directed parking the morning of the race. Weather was not a factor that year but I heard the race had been canceled in the past due to storms. Ready to run this one again!
