This is one of those series races with no cutoffs. It was well managed, the race director is personable and he goes out on the course 2x to check in the runners. The aid station has trail race kind of nutrition along with water, Gatorade and gels. The course is a 5 mile loop and is hilly. There is little traffic but the road isn’t closed, the shoulder is narrow and some cars come over the hills fast. I found the course a little challenging because it was my 3rd marathon in 8 days and I had just finished 80 miles at 3 Days at the Fair the day before. I do recommend this entire race series. It was very well done. The medal is small but that didn’t matter to me.

I signed up for the 48 hr event so I could get my marathon for NJ as well as tackle a personal distance record. A lot of the people stay for the entire 6 days. There are some ultra rock stars here. It’s a 1 mile mostly flat loop with minimal shade. It’s on a fairgrounds, you can set up a tent with sleeping options or you can rent an RV that is delivered to the site. The bling is amazing, you had a choice of a beautiful plush beach towel, a Columbia hiking kaki shirt or a Yeti cup. The awards bling were beautiful and you can accumulate miles year after year and it doesn’t have to be consecutive. The race director chats with you when you take breaks and his wife is involved as well. The entire family volunteers in the kitchen and the food is amazing. It varies throughout the day, breakfast quesadillas in the morning, hamburgers at lunch and dinner or hot dogs, they also had vegan options and plenty of other food choices. People return to the event year after year and they’ve built quite a tight, caring community. I ended up with 80 miles which is a personal distance record. I was aiming for 100 and could have done that if I had slept less but I had another marathon the following day so I wanted to reserve energy for that. I love the towel. I stayed at an Airbnb before the race in Hamburg, there is an excellent breakfast place called Granny’s Kitchen. Also there is an Appalachian Trailhead in Vernon NJ just a 1/2 hr away and it’s an easy section of AP. This race is really unique, you take enough breaks that the 1 mile loops don’t seems super boring and you can run throughout the night when it is much cooler,

This was my first time to do one of these series races that has no cut off time. I was doing this as what I called a “marathon sandwich” 3 marathons in 8 days, the middle one being an ultra personal distance record. The race is very well organized, race director goes out on the course a couple of times and checks on everyone. This course had 9 loops, I found the area so pretty that I didn’t mind all the loops. The aid stations are fantastic, they have the type of food you get at trail races in addition to water, Gatorade and gels. The medals are small and plain but that didn’t bother me. I stayed in Providence at an Airbnb and took the commuter train into Boston the following day to walk the Freedom Trail and go see the Boston finish line. The following day I saw people doing the Providence Marathon as I left the city. It looked like a hilly course and it was hot and I was so glad I had done the Red Island marathon with its cool temps and shade. I highly recommend this race.

I found this race to be surprisingly good! I would recommend it to anyone. There is another one that I really wanted to do, that is more scenic, but I thought I wouldn’t meet the qualifying time due to the hills. With a 7 hr cutoff, you have a generous time to finish. There are indoor bathrooms to use before the race and parking is close to the start/finish. The course is an out and back and it was fun to see all the runners coming at me but not fun when I made the turnaround and I was pretty much by myself because the slower ones were way behind me. There was also an early start so some of the slower runners may have been there. I opted to pass on the early start because there was a remote chance I would get an AG award and you couldn’t get one if you took the early start. My gamble paid off and I finished 3rd and there were more than 3 in my AG!. I loved the bagpipes at the start and there was a solo bagpiper later in the race. I loved the music at the race, not so much rock and roll but more rhythm instruments and drummers. Aid stations were well stocked but they did not have any gels. I didn’t miss that, I carry my own. The course is pretty, on the Atlantic oceanfront for some portions and in beautiful neighborhoods. There are rolling hills but nothing with steep ascent. There was some fall color and the temp was mid 50s throughout and lots of shade. It was a windy day but the trees provided shelter. I stayed at the Black Elephant hostel. It is amazing!!! It sells out early, I learned about it from another poster here. I don’t usually stay at hostels but after learning how expensive hotels are in Portland and seeing the review on this one, I gave it a try. It was fun chatting with other runners before the race at the hostel. I learned that I came in 3rd later that evening, after I had already left Portland and gone up to Acadia NP. They don’t mail their awards so I emailed the race director and was able to pick up my award on my way back to Boston. Something fun to do the day before the race is go visit Cape Elizabeth and have a lobster roll at Bite of Maine.

The marathon lived up to its stellar reputation. The worst part was the traffic jam on the exit ramp into the event center, I sat in the ramp for over 1/2 hr and there was no one directing traffic into the parking lot where you paid $10 to park. But once inside, the expo was excellent and the spaghetti dinner was superb, biggest race dinner I’ve ever been to. Weather was ideal, low 50s with a tailwind thru mile 20. I stayed in university housing and it was perfect. They had coffee, hot water, bagels and fruit at 4:00 am. Shuttle picks up and drops off right at the university. Pre-race area had coffee, Gatorade and water. Plenty of room to stretch and change clothes. Plenty of port a potties at start. The start was kind of strange. The elites went off first, then the citizen runners were supposed to line up by finish time. I never heard a gun go off or an announcement that the race had started. I am a back of the pack runner and there were still a lot of runners that hadn’t lined up yet but the corral was empty so off I went. There were a lot of back of the pack runners so I had no worries about finishing as one of the last ones. We had the entire road to ourselves and the view of Lake Superior was stunning. Stay on the shoulder because the road does have a camber. There are gentle hills and lots of volunteer support. The miles clicked away so quickly that I ran too fast and paid for it in the last 6 miles. The last mile is not well marked is my only criticism of the course. Most of the food was gone when I finished and the route to the shuttle pick up is not well marked either. The last shuttle pick up is 7.5 hrs after race start so if you finish close to the cutoff time you need to hustle to the shuttle. This is one of the few times I used the coupons from the race. I got free moonshine at Tavern on the Hill which was very close to university housing and since I was staying over for a few days to hike, I used the gas discount coupon. Make sure you look at the virtual bag, there is a discount for Duluth Coffee and an excellent discount from storm creek. I highly recommend this race.

I stayed a 1/2 mile from start. Aid stations were awesome, course was well marked we had great weather until the headwind at the last couple of miles but so what. Free pictures and they were out to us that evening, spectacular!!! Really nice jacket, lightweight.

Easy course in pretty state parks. There is a slight elevation in the 2nd half but other than that, mostly flat. Can be windy but only last few miles was windy this time. Not much spectator support but peaceful surroundings. If you thrive on hype, this is not the race for you. Excellent support for back of the pack run/walkers and 50 staters. Can be indoors until the start with indoor bathrooms. Also a 7k the day before with pretty medals.

With so many races being cancelled in 2021, I was grateful to have this race. There wasn’t much communication from the race committee in the weeks leading up to the race which worried me that it may be cancelled. The course is a double loop, with a variation of hills and flat and not well-marked. The race guidelines informed runners that it was their responsibility to know the course. I drove it the day before but on the second loop I ran a block longer than the race course but fortunately a runner saw me and called me back. As you ran through the city, the shoulders were narrow and you were running with traffic. Cars came very close to the cones and there weren’t any signs that I noticed that cautioned residents that a race was in place. I didn’t feel safe. The only port a pots were at the start and halfway through, about 6 mile mark. Towards the end of the race, during the last 3 miles, I saw the cones being pulled up ahead of me. I saw a city bus almost clip a couple of runners ahead of me. The shirt was ok but the medal is really cute.

The course has a 6 hr time limit and I thought I would be cutting it close. Halfway thru the race, I began to have back issues and decided to walk. My hometown race, Route66 in Tulsa, holds the finish line open until the last person crosses, regardless of time limit. I crossed my fingers and hoped Utah Valley would do that for me. At no point, did any volunteer or safety official tell me that the timing mat would be pulled. I did finish the entire course in over 7.30 hrs. It was over 90 for the final 5 miles. I am proud of myself for not quitting. They gave me my marathon medal and the additional medal for doing both races but no official results. Fortunately the 50 state marathon club allows you to count 2 races like this if you have your bib and finisher medal. Utah is a beautiful state but there are prettier marathon races than this one. Their medals and tech shirt are really nice.

Beautiful destination, easy free parking, well organized. COVID precautions, scenic course, small, cloudy. This course could be challenging on a sunny day, very little shade but it was chilly, cloudy and windy on my day and I was grateful for that. Plenty of aid stations and porta potties and they stayed manned all throughout the race. I finished 5th from last and was happy to to see other faces at the aid stations. Part of the swag was a ram face mask that I have worn a lot. This rivaled Big Sur for destination activities. I went to Teton Natl Park the next day and hiked for most of the day. The next day I went to Yellowstone and spent the day there. If you’re looking for a marathon in Wyoming, this is it.
