The Frozen 5K occurred at Lake Nokomis for a second year, and this time added a slight hill so that the start could also be the finish line, unlike last year in which we ran around the lake and needed about a tenth of a mile beyond the start. It was 36°, so much warmer than last year as well. Great swag, particularly for dogs, and a nicer finisher medal than last year.

12 hours and 30+ miles through constant rain, endless mud, and temperatures decreasing from 55°F to 48°F. On the first lap, I battled slippery mud slides down hills and a constant rain in 48°F weather that made most of the climbing obstacles nearly impossible to complete. Once I made it to the halfway point, I spent less than 5 min in the transition area fueling up and didn’t sit by the fire the staff had started so as to not get too comfortable. The second lap was brutal. I was cold to the core and zombie-like for a portion as I honestly can’t remember the walk between miles 27 and 29. I also lost count of how many burpees I had done after 360… But as soon as I saw the A-Frame Cargo and fire jump in the distance, I knew it had been worth it.

The course was a tough slog through thick mud and what are normally “easy” obstacles the first time around soon become “not so easy” after you’re halfway through that second 15 mile lap. Blood, sweat, and tears were all shed throughout the day so that I could earn that belt buckle. I also completed my first Spartan Endurance Trifecta.
And thank you to all the Beast runners offering words of encouragement throughout the course; they were much appreciated!
