Very well organized race and best course to PR on both half marathon and marathon. Just need to have a plan on how to run it accordingly – Coach Paul strategy in the Revel FB page is the best. Run the first 9 miles of rolling hills at comfortable pace, then comes all downhill for the remaining of the marathon course when the pace should be pushed. Starting too hard on the first miles will cost you on the last 10k for sure. Out of my 38 life marathons, best 3 times are on this race, every year I ran it. Just plan for a longer recovery after the race. This race does take its toll on the quads for sure, especially if one is not paying attention to execute it with a high cadence with short strides.

If you shoot for a specific time, drive the course the day before to learn this “beast” course and make a plan of attack; but my recommendation is to forget about the time; let this course be a surprise and take in the beauty, the amazing views along with the hills and all the quietness (just waives and wind). Oh, if you are looking for encouragement from spectators, this is not the race for that.
The bus trip to the start line takes quiet a while. At the start can be cold and it’s a bit of a wait (til all the buses make it back).
Majority of the people stay at the finish, in Monterrey or Carmel.
Because i usually make this race a minivacation to spend time hiking after the race, I prefer to stay in Big Sur (near the start line) but it can take a while after the race to get back (they are buses taking you back to the start).
